You can, but they're interspersed with ads. Which have notably worsened with time.

I haven't been a free user for six months now (mine expires on 4/20 u__u) but I explicitly don't want to go back to it because the ads really were just a massive pain

My mom listens to Spotify Free all the time, and yeah, the ads are pretty bad. Though not as bad as some of the terrestrial radio stations here, which will happily run 40 minutes of commercials and 20 minutes of programs per hour, or at least it feels like it. : P
