I don't tend to start overarching stories in medias res, which I fear can short-circuit interest.

You're doing the thing again where you see some specific work or group of works do a thing and then assume that that's the "right" way to do them and that you're somehow Bad for not doing them in your own fiction.

I do this with music sometimes. It's not productive and it's the quickest path to having bum days where you get nothing done.

unearthed is uncharted but made by saudi devs who while very enthusiastic about making a video game lack the necessary experience

OTOH it has cool history tidbits
