For a while, it was the thing to refer to Internet without the definite article. Like, back in the days when people used Internet without the World Wide Web. 

I distinctly remember a news broadcast, from the 80s or very early 90s, about what an amazing new trend Internet was, and various users sharing what Internet meant to them. One guy said it let him indulge his "deep and abiding passion for all things Thai."
