The Grand Cinema Discussion Thread

For discussion of movies.

Last night I watched Punishment Park and The Wicker Man (1973). I liked both. I also couldn't help but side with Lord Summerisle in The Wicker Man, largely because the Serjeant's sanctimonious, intolerant, frankly rude behaviour as a guest just disgusted me. Punishment Park deserves a wider audience: it's a fake documentary about a hypothetical use of the McCarran Act of 1950 against the New Left by Richard Nixon in a sadistic manner

Those threads sure seem to have been active since 2013, yessiree

Anyway, I assume the 1973 Wicker Man is not hilarious like the Nicolas Cage one.

It isn't. It starts out campy and a bit absurd and then gradually turns into something really stark and unsettling. The protagonist is seriously a dick but that's obviously intentional, and it becomes quite clear by the end that there really isn't anyone in the film who isn't desperate to the point of delusion.
