  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”

Somehow I never even noticed the lighter blue stripe was there. It does look better without it, though.

  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
Have either of you seen it at a larger size before now?
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Yeah, but I think that I thought that it was some kind of fake reflection effect rather than, you know, a blue bar...
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
I honestly never could tell why it was there. Wasn't sure if it was some attempt to do gloss or not...

It got relegated to the B-Side because there isn't much to go on yet, but it's part of the positioning of FX as a suite, which includes FX, FXM (an ad-supported block which takes up half of the space on the Fox Movie Channel, which, ironically, was once named fXM: Movies from Fox), and FXX (a youth-oriented channel that will replace Fox Soccer on September 2).
  • Is it weird that I think FXX's logo is awkward but the normal FX one is actually rather nice? I dunno why, they're effectively the same, but the balance is much better with only 1 "x", it seems.

Yes, but somehow it never quite "registered" with me before.

The normal FX logo is really pretty compared to that awful Fox logo.

It never comes up when people talk about ugly logos because no1curr about teevee lol :P

    THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
Just saw the FXX logo....who thought it was a good idea to rip off Exxon? :P

That and it vaguely reminds me of the Charles Fries Productions logo from the late 1970s/early 1980s.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
I guess they figured it looked edgy...

The FXM logo is a piece of shit, too.

Funny how corporations want us to think they're perfect and yet have the capacity to screw up their logos.

Honestly, we can talk about how bad the logos are, but at the same time it's not like the designers had a lot to work with.

What I'm getting at is that "FXX" and "FXM" are stupid names.

How is "FXM" a stupid name? At least it means "FX Movies", whereas "FXX" was probably dreamed up in a boardroom meeting without caring about the fact that it sounds like a joke.

See, I'd almost give FXM a pass for being "FX Movies", but...well, I kinda feel like FX is a stupid name too.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Am I completely insane for thinking that FXX should be pronounced [fx:] according to IPA standards—you know, "fccchhhh"?

^^Is it because it's pretty much "Fox" without the O?

^Well, I'm thinking of how I pronounced "WTXX" as "whuh-ticks"...

    THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
All this makes me wonder if the next channel will be FXXX, the porn channel The Simpsons predicted way back in "Lisa's Wedding".
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
What about XF, or XXF, or MXF?
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
    Oh jeez.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
This is relevant to my interests, especially because one of the hospitals near me is getting this rebrand.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
Also, looking through the B-Side...is it just me, or is it 1983 somewhere again? The Louisville Slugger logo in particular looks like something off a Chex box. Sooooooo much Optima.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
Optima seems to be the go-to typeface for anything that's too tacky, somehow...

Also the Novant Health rebrand includes Whitney. I don't know if I'm imagining things, but Whitney seems to have shot up in popularity...

I confess, I wouldn't have seen the H if it wasn't pointed out to me.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
I saw it, right before reading about how it was there.
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
Also, someone pointed out on the Doritos rebrand article that the new logo is pretty much what people in the 1980s thought 2013 would look like, complete with what would have been seen as gratuitous references to TRON.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
    It is pretty '80s...

    Oh jesus

The River Twygz music popped into my head upon looking at the new logo

I am not looking forward to that showing up on my envelopes from them >_>
  • THIS MACHINE KILLS FASCISTS
Wow, that thing just screams "CHEAP SOFTWARE FROM 1991".

    what the crap

they don't even look like they have thumbs in the new version

    and really with the helvetica
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
    And really with the UNDERHANDS
  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
the new ones don't really resemble those much, to me

at least not as much as the old ones
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
The Catch Card picture is misleading; they have these sort of skeletal "arms" on them:

  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
Ah, I do kinda see more resemblance there, though I still think the old logo was a bit closer.

Also: The River Twygz looks fucking awesome.

Instagram got a new wordmark. The icon itself has stayed the same.

I dunno how to feel about it, myself. It's very professional (and seems very much a product of the new Facebook ownership) but I don't really know if it's a great fit for the service. The old one was both quirky and eye-pleasing, just like Instagram itself.

I'll have to get used to it, I suppose.
  • I will say, though, after having taken a closer look at the seams on the letters in the old one, the new one is definitely a vast improvement in terms of sheer aesthetic appeal.

I'm really gonna miss the old I, on the other hand. The new one looks like a scimitar.

One thing that always bugged me about the old wordmark was that the g and r didn't join properly. I get that it's an off-the-shelf typeface, but would it have killed the designer to modify that part a bit?
  • i like the new one more
  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
Aesthetically, I like the new one better.

In context, though, the old one is "small startup trying to be cutesy" while new one is "obviously evil corporation trying to look friendly." Not sure which of those is worse. :P
  • For once, or maybe twice, I was in my prime.

From the world of mass media:

What gets my goat are the complaints that 21st Century Fox's logo is too "simple" and "retro".

Far be it for me to assume that non-designers/design enthusiasts know this, but isn't being simple a good thing for a logo? Do they want it to be some overly-ostentatious mess?

That said, the "21ST CENTURY FOX" wordmark initially drove me insane. Looked a bit too playful to me.

I actually really like the 21st Century Fox logo, though I can see why the Verge commenters would say it's too simple. It is a bit low-key but it won't really be consumer-facing anyway, I'd presume.

Also that Fusion logo hurts my eyes. I hope they get a good firm to salvage its brand television-wise, because I personally feel like that's going to end up being more of a factor in the success than just the logo itself.

If nothing else, that "FOX" is a hell of a lot better than what I'm used to from that word.
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
    I know it.

I guess regular people like/are used to seeing their logos "jazzed-up"...

I'll admit, my first thought with the Fusion logo was "does the F stand for 'fugly'?"

It's that unusually snarky for me?

  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
    I dunno.

Reading the CLG Wiki, I think I prefer Lorimar's "Line of Doom" to its successor (which amended the "LORIMAR" wordmark, detatching the "LO" from the "RI", and adding a crossbar to the "A"; it also added a red bar reading "TELEVISION" underneath it). There's too much going on in that one and honestly the rippling marble is kind of off-putting and creepy somehow.

...well, its successor as the Lorimar logo; I had forgotten about Lorimar-Telepictures.
