I think what really interests me about this is that it's such a profoundly outdated idea of what music is, and how it should be delivered.
One of the people in that second video describes Laser's format as "pretty much all pop hits, not too much eclectic stuff". As a positive! They mean that in a good way!
And it's just very neat how much radio ethos has changed over the years.
Like, when I was listening to it daily (January 1991 - July 1992), Q-94 in Richmond had a split personality. They were very much a hot AC (complete with a morning zoo) in the daytime, and put in cooler music like house, pop rap and EDM during the evening when the kids were around. (Keep in mind that this was still the early 1990s, so there was a non-trivial amount of hair metal, too, even after Nevermind.)
Weekends could go either way, and they also ran public affairs programs on weekend mornings like WTOP does here.
