Heaper Color Identities

Basically just post who would be who in the context of MTG color philosophies

eg Centie is red-white, naney is green-red-blue, Sunn is, uh, the deconstructionist view of Ravnica's Izzet

Yes, though that's more the thematic side of Green than the philosophic side.

I personally view Green as being about following tradition, staying in comfort zones and listening to your gut instinct

  • Blue, probably

Anyhow. Probably Blue-Red-White? I unno, there's not a lot of info on wedge philosophies, so I have to guess a little.

Miko is green and blue, which are also her favorite colors.

Mostly Innistrad. The black cards would often be vampires, the blue ones spirits and zombies

What do you think of Jeskai? Or Lightning Angel, I guess?

The Tarkir wedges are interesting, since they tend to focus predominantly on one colour. I think Andrew Weisel did some good articles on those, actually.

I guess the best way to put it is UR with W added to flavour?
  • In general, wedges are considered as the two allied colors with the shared enemy color for flavor. At least, that's how the analyses that I've found have done it.

Tarkir's different in that it's one primary color with the others providing flavor. Jeskai, for instance, is basically blue with white and red influences, Abzan's white with green-black influences, etc.

It's the other way round actually--the clans were two allies plus an enemy, so they could transition to being allied-color dragon broods in Dragons. Wedges in general are defined by one color and its two enemies (see: Apocalypse).
  • I have always liked Raka (to use the old name for it) because there's a lot of variety in the 'Murrica colors. Klaus from Girl Genius qualifies for it. A lot of the more socially minded experimentalist artists of the last half-century could fall under it.

    Hm. I see.

I dunno, I felt that they all emphasized one color in theme, at least. Abzan is white because they're family and spirit oriented, Temur is green because shamanism, snake one is black because zombies, mardu was red because speeeeeeeeeeed, and Jeskai was blue because spells.

They didn't share the color attributes as evenly as in, say, Ravnica
  • True.

So Heap, what's my color identity?
  • More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.
    transcolor white to asian
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.

  • Like, there were four guilds that had red in them, and each of those guilds had at least one or two goblins in them, just in different roles (Izzet having electromancers, Rakdos having entertainers, etc.). All four of the black guilds incorporated the undead in one way or another.

And there's a reason why the post-Ugin Khans were all monocolor.

Also, I wasn't intending on doing colors for everyone who walked in here, but I know that Jane and Sredni are Izzet
  • I heard magic and was summoned. (also I am quintessentially Izzet)

They do emphasize one color, and the reason they emphasize one color over tohers is that if you try to have one faction equally represent all three of its component colors, it is pulled in too many mechanical and flavor directions. Alara's shards were also centered in a single color.

  • I thought this would be about favorite colors, in which case they are blue, green, and red.

But then it turned out to be about MtG, in which case my favorite colors are basically the same. Actually, add black. Just because I don't like white in MtG; it's no fun to play against. Though if we're just talking about gameplay, blue isn't very fun to play against either due to counterspells. So I guess green and black are my favorites, because I haven't had experience with a good red deck. Though my favorite one in oligoplayer (i.e. 3+) MtG was this blue-black deck of cheap creatures, many of which had regen.

Also, Weiss and Blake are my favorite characters from RWBY.

Man, personal color identity has nothing to do with what you are inside.

Given the choice, i'll play Jund colors over Azorius, but I ain't red and I certainly ain't green.

    Magic the Gathering color "personalities".

White: protection, law and rule of law, procedure.  associated with plains.  famous for protection and angelic entities.  (not necessarily good.)
Red: fire, passion, creativity, art, impetuousness.  associated with mountains.  famous for direct damage, and hapless goblins.
Blue: intelligence, craftiness, scholarship.  associated with islands.  famous for water-related things and counterspells, as well as birds for some reason.
Green: nature and the natural world, instinct, growth, regeneration.  associated with forests.  famous for all manner of creatures, and creature-buffing effects.
Black: sacrifice, destruction, disease.  associated with swamps.  famous for destruction and various demonic entities.  (not necessarily evil.)

It's basically a flavor thing, with some gameplay implications.

Unfortunately, yellow is missing.  But the Plains cards are slightly yellow.

(Also, there is a clear discrimination against aquatic biomes in the design of mana sources in Magic the Gathering.)

    white maybe then

white with blue aspirations maybe but i don't think that's how this game works
  • Eh, I'd call Glenn's description more of a thematic description of the colors. I usually think of them as philosophies, which gets around the inherent 'white=good, black=evil' theme in the thematic line of thought.

White is about the strength of the community, first and foremost. It likes rules and regulations and clear boundaries, and generally focuses on making sure the community runs smoothly and happily in a macro sense. On the flip side of the coin, it's also the color that has no sense of individuality, seeing every individual as simply one part of a greater organism. It's also a bit elitist, seeing the world in black and white (hurr hurr), and looks badly upon anyone who falls outside of their community and outside of their morals. It's the color of churches and community leaders, but also the colors of fascism and communism. In gameplay, this is reflected by white tending towards a bunch of small creatures that are either expendable or have abilities that benefit the group.

Blue is a color that seeks perfection, first and foremost. While most focus on the knowledge aspect of blue, that's more of a vehicle by which blue pursues perfection. Blue likes to have a solution to every problem. Blue likes to have a witty bon mot whenever someone insults them. Blue believes that anything is achievable as long as you're willing to do the work to prepare for it. There's a reason, after all, that blue's the favored color among combo players and control players. Combos appeal to blue's need for everything to go their way, and their careful preparations that make that possible, and the latter appeal to blue's need to control the situation at any given point, preferring planning over more chaotic gameplay

Black is the color of ambition, unscrupulousness, and self. Black usually has a goal or goals in mind, one(s) that will usually bring great self-satisfaction, and it's willing to do what's necessary to achieve those goals. In most MTG-related work, this goal is usually something that's detrimental or outright deleterious to a large number of people, and what's necessary often involves souls or demonic possession or whatnot. But accounting for basic empathy, black usually manifests in the real world as ambition, and the sacrifice is usually on a personal level, sacrificing money or time or friendships to achieve your goals. This is the color of capitalism, of business, of the auteur achieving his great work.

Red is the color of immediacy, emotion and shares self with black. While Black is more focused on long-term goals, Red is a color focuses on the short-term. Prefers to act rather than plan. Doesn't care for rules or regulation or planning. On a more long-term sense, it's also a color about accepting your true feelings on a subject and expressing them. Red's the color of athletes, con men, and anyone who has to think on their feet. It's also the color of the musician who's just trying to express himself.

Green is the color of nature and instinct. In MTG, this usually manifests itself in elves, trees, birds, bears, bears, bears and such. But in the real world, we are usually apart from such things, so I think it's better to think of it as the philosophy of acting natural. You have your predilections, you have your traits, your traditions and you're just going to live with them. It's the color most resistant to change and the color most against ambition. It's about finding your place in the world, and once you get there, you're supposed to dig in your heels and never look back.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
OK, then i think i'm white and blue.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
Thanks for the explanations, that was very in-depth.
  • A correction, on the advisement of someone who bites.

While Green, in its most negative form, has a tendency towards stagnation, it is also a color of growth and, in that way, is not entirely against ambition. It's approach to it is just a bit more...passive than black's. The natural progression of your talents as opposed to the unrelenting pursuit of talent.

It's also a color of family. Not to the point of neglecting the individual, as white might, but in a sense that it's important to function in a way that suits and supports the environment you're in
  • And yeah, I've done a bit of reading. And to be clear, my views on the colors are a bit adjusted. Some would say my interpretation of black is a bit nicer than canon, but I feel it fits better. And you've just seen that I'm a bit biased when it comes to green.

This works as a good shorthand, and literally any of the links in the first paragraph can give a good summary. Rosewater, in general, is the guy to go to for musings on color philosophy
