  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
If your sword art is that good, he should be recommending it in person!

I knew it would be your dad
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
my brother recommended me this show

and he was quite put-out when i subsequently mentioned what a negative response i'd gotten when i expressed interest in watching it to some friends (ie here)

Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
    He has forfeited his soul.
  • Munch munch, chomp chomp...
    I'm so sorry.

HEY FUCK YOU I LIKE THAT MOVIE
  • My mom's favorite action movie is The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen
that is a weird choice for "favorite action movie" because like...

    it's so average
  • My mom's favorite movies are The Sacrifice and Twister

I used to like League, when I was young and wide-eyed and stupid.

I tried to watch it a few years back, even after I told myself I still liked it. I don't anymore.

I don't even like Alan Moore's League, anymore, either.
  • honestly that's fair I think I last saw it when I was like 14

which was 7 years ago holy shit I'm freaking out a little bit

I actually once had someone tell me I was "literally doomed to a life of failure" because I liked that movie.

    So far they're not wrong.
  • Touch the cow. Do it now.
Alan Moore's league was pretty entertaining, I thought
  • didn't he eventually introduce harry potter as a villain?

    that's weird

was this a person on something awful

it was on TVTropes so it could've been Eliezer Yudkowsky or that guy with the world's biggest penis but it probably wasn't Alan Moore
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Did I ever tell you guys about the time Eliezer Yudkowsky got mad at me.

    sure

I talked to him once about like the most banal thing and I have tried several times to remember what specifically we talked about but I can never remember.

It wasn't like a PM convo or anything it was just on the forum IIRC.
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Rottweiler made a thread about how Yudkowsky should respond to critiques of rationality made by various philosophers.

And then in the thread, I predicted what he'd say.

And then Eliezer came in and got angry at me for pretending I knew him, or something.

I'm more surprised that your father watches anime, TBH.

That is awesome!  You've ticked off one of my greatest foes.  You are my hero!

    Good job.
  • My brother unironically loves Sword Art Online and I give him hell for it.

He feels compelled toward violence almost every time I mention it with a profane word replacing the "sword" in the title.

I have never heard of Sword Art Online, and I think it is kind of sad that you guys are making fun of people for liking a thing.

Then again, this is me commenting with no idea of what I am talking about.
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i still think it just sounds like a deviantart-like website where all the pictures are of swords
  • honestly the only thing i know about it is that there is lots of suggested tentacle rape in the second season and there is a bad guy named death gun who has some mind-bendingly bad dialogue in the original light novel
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat

    me too

also all I hear about it is how it's awful and how it's misogynistic
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    it sounds really bad

but when i mentioned the tentacle rape thing to my brother he seemed genuinely confused as to what i was referencing
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
it's one of those things that other than the misogyny people go "lol this sucks" without saying why
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
Also yes, eventually, Not!Harry Potter was the ultimate villain of one of the arcs. He was the antichrist who used his peeing dick as a magical focus.

Not!Aleister Crowley, in his efforts to occultly destroy Christianity, switched bodies with his younger, gullible followers so he could live over a hundred years, and bring about the Beast of the Apocalypse, the Moonchild. He fucked a lot of people.

Eventually, Crowley started a magic school in England's magical realm, their dreamtime and threatened or used people to manipulate the Moonchild to think he was a special hero. When the Moonchild found out, he went on a rampage of sex and destruction and killed everyone in the dreamtime, cut off Crowley's head and locked himself somewhere to stew and stew somewhere, lamenting his lost childhood and slowly mutated into the Beast.

Eventually, the Beast was fought by the old and tired members of the League, Quartermain killed by the Beast's magic pee. The Beast was then killed by Mary Poppins as the female face of God, who then took Crowley's head to presumably punish for all eternity.

honestly, i was really surprised by how . . . vehement everyone seemed, when this came up before?  like you were all seriously concerned that i might watch this show, because that would be awful

    i was taken aback
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
So metatextually and metafictionally, you can see how Alan Moore feels about Harry Potter.

I feel about SAO the way you feel about The Spectacular Spider-Man, Anonus

Essentially, it's an average at best anime that doesn't do much to revolutionize or further its medium but is hailed by its fans as a tentpole of modern animation to the point of annoyance

    (also, incest)

The movie or the cartoon, Tre?

maybe its cuz i haven't read it, but that doesn't sound like it has anything to do with harry potter at all

tbh I've barely seen SSM and was basing my view of it on Section's view of it :n
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i don't mean 'i doubt this is a harry potter reference' i just can't see how that could constitute any kind of commentary on potter
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
I think it's really well-done, but hardly revolutionary. Excellently executed, and that's it.

Aliroz: I have never heard of Sword Art Online, and I think it is kind of sad that you guys are making fun of people for liking a thing.

Then again, this is me commenting with no idea of what I am talking about.

I've stated my reasons before, and my response here is akin to "lol, sorry he wants you to watch a genuinely badly written show." I have a friend who enjoys it, and to each their own I don't really fault them even if I disagree entirely with them. My initial comment could have been better, but Aliroz, there're differences between "lolyousuck" and "this is not a good show, here's why", and there's never a good reason to take offense to the latter.

Tach: honestly, i was really surprised by how . . . vehement everyone seemed, when this came up before?  like you were all seriously concerned that i might watch this show, because that would be awful

    i was taken aback

Was I seriously that "vehement"? Maybe it's because I criticize things, like, daily, but alongside the above a detailed reasoning of why I think it is simply not a good show/a show worth watching is not equivalent to vehemence to me. It's not like whenever someone mentions something I don't care for - Naruto for example - I go into a rage or nothing, let alone spend much of my time thinking about stuff I dislike.

At worst, it would probably be an actual waste of time, disregarding how you can... analyze how it's bad, I guess, like anything else.

same, i was under the impression that this show was like the scummiest scum to ever scum
