I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
It's never been clear which idea came first
I do remember reading that The Wild had been in production for like 15 years, the first few of which were Jeffrey Katzenberg's (head honcho at DreamWorks Animation) last years at Disney
though DWA had a penchant for lifting ideas from Disney and Pixar anyway (Kingdom of the Sun, which later morphed into The Emperor's New Groove, begat The Road to El Dorado, and of course Finding Nemo begat Shark Tale)
I must hasten to note that The Emperor's New Groove and The Road to El Dorado are very different films with very different themes and both are enjoyable for completely different reasons. So that actually worked out pretty well all around. But that was also at a time when Dreamworks had some consistency and were actually making movies worth paying attention to.
^^ And I thought that The Despicable Me (the original, mind) was pretty watchable. But neither was all that impressive. And they didn't even invent the characters in the former.
Yeah, I'm more disappointed at how half-assed it looked as an adaptation than anything else. At this point I expect Dreamworks to either botch or shamelessly milk decent premises--with the possible exception of Megamind, which I heard was way better than it looked--but they at least keep it to their own ideas rather than ones with a history of actual quality.
Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
I mean I love that Shrek exists, because if Shrek didn't exist we wouldn't have Neil Cicierega's Mouth Sounds.
But I don't like watching the movie. Something about it I can't quite put my finger on, other than the feeling of just plain disdain for the subject matter that runs through the whole movie.
Megamind was a pretty good movie, all things considered. I really like it. It presents a superheroic paradigm that you don't often see, with the relationship of the hero and villain defined mostly as rock-star rivalries.
^^ Shrek was originally a very strange, silly little children's book. The first movie was decent, if not astounding; I get the disdain, but I don't think that I share it. I can't remember if I even actually saw the others.
^ Precisely. It was actual fun for the whole family because it was smart and snappy while still being appealing to young children.
