Is Mulan the story of a boy, raised in hate and trained to be an assassin, grappling with his killer instinct as it threatens to destroy his first love? Is Mulan a carefully thought out political drama wherein two fearsome warlords manipulate their own families like pawns in chess?
I hated Sleeping Beauty. In fact, most Disney movies that actually had involvement by, y'know, Mr. Disney, just seemed stupid to me. Then again, I'm young and stupid.
(Pinnochio, Lady and the Tramp, 101 Dalmatians and Peter Pan are pretty good though.)
My favorite Disney movie is probably Chicken Little, though it is far from the best Disney movie ever. No, that's either Beauty and the Beast or Mulan.
As for best direct-to-video Disney film, The Lion King 1 1/2, bar none.
It's surprising how few of the Disney animated features are actually fairy tale movies.
They've done two Perrault/Grimm stories (Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, both hewing much closer to Perrault). Two and a half more from the Grimms (Snow White, Princess and the Frog, and Tangled). The Little Mermaid from Andersen. Beauty and the Beast from Beaumont. Aladdin from the Thousand and One Nights.
And that's it. Though of course Hercules, Mulan, and Pocahontas are folk stories too.
