but now I'm confused. Why did we jump from an island murder mystery to something else? The writers get bored and thought "Shit. lets be santa evaluate some characters elsewhere"

I think the series involves a lot of genre blending, and I think it's pretty interesting and entertaining for doing so.

the K-guy, he's kind of...boring. The rest of them are upbeat and interesting but he's just kind of meh to all the interesting things going on.

Kyon is one of those characters I can't help but relate to for basically being misanthropic, sarcastic, and utterly impotent.

Kyon the only character I actually liked by the time the show went on. Never was much of a fan of the Rei archetype, Mikuru was just annoyingly pseudo-cute, Koizumi was the kind of cryptic asshole you just want to slap and Haruhi was either incredibly bitchy or somewhat likeable most of the time.

I wasn't much of a fan of the archetypes of the characters in general, but I thought they managed to be interesting in spite of that.

The archetypes themselves don't bother me. I watched Evangelion and it had pretty much the same archetypes. It's the rather mediocre episodical presentation that does it for me. It's always the same: Haruhi's unstable, her friends have to cheer her up and make her happy so that everything ever doesn't blow up, crisis averted, and we move on to step one.

that and there's simply no reason to identify with or like these characters except for Kyon. And even then, he can be a bit of an annoying, complaining dick a lot of the time.

I remember browsing the wiki back when Haruhi and Gurren Lagann were really popular. I think Negima was pretty popular there, too, at one point. Never really watched any of those shows, though.
