^^I think there are a few that come close to Greek mythological characters: namely Hydreigon, Houndoom for non-Cerberus hellhounds, and maybe if you could train Tauros to stand on his hind legs. Nobody completely based on them, though.

I had similar experiences with Fourier. Seemed it was OK at first to get into the games, but the whole franchise became increasingly lamer as the TV series increased in popularity.
Apparently NOW it's OK to be an adult and like Pokemon as I've seen a lot more people talk about the games and their teams and now their are god damned spreadsheets involved in the best to to level up Pokemon and what does the most damage, etc...

^If it helps any, I only use Excel spreadsheets for silly things like making lists of Pokémon that I like, organizing them, and giving them nicknames.
Edit: Pokémon is decently popular at my school. We don't talk about it much, but enough people have favorable opinions of it that there was a pretty successful dorm party themed around it last year. One of the RAs in that dorm is a huge fan.

I'm moving an old question to a new post so the thread looks a little less cluttered and rambly.
So, does anyone see a certain kind of Pokémon as a particular gender, or alternate between both? For me, it depends on the Pokémon. I tend to see Buizel, Staraptor, and Yamask as female because that's how they ended up in the games I played using them. But for most of the starters, I tend to alternate between seeing them as male and female.
I don't genderize any pokemon in my head because the ones I like are hard to divide that way. It's mostly with the demeanors of certain pokemon that I draw certain behaviors, but never let gender define them. Like Darkrai. Brooding, Silent and Aggressive, but I wouldn't apply any male characteristics to it. Unfortunately pokemon like Gardevoir, Jynx and the like are hard to avoid this with.

I don't really let the common characteristics of my favorite Pokémon define their gender, either. Usually it's based on either what I have in the games or whatever I feel like at the moment. As a result, I get things like a female Feraligatr who happens to be a "cool big sister" type.
I have realized that playing with other people is the driving force behind Pokemon in general and it's the reason why I never play the game anymore. Being extremely articulate and careful in training your favorites means nothing when all you do is beat Battle Tower bots and gain points towards items you already have unwarranted amounts of.
I wish there were more non-storyline boss-fights in Pokemon.

Though I haven't had the feeling of post-game disillusionment much because I'm not very good at finishing my Pokémon games. Out of the 11 I own (including spin-offs), I've only ever beaten the main story of five of them.
I've beaten the story on all of them but found the after-game very dreary. There's just never enough mons to catch and train, and some you would never know existed and need to get online help or stratguides to find.

I'm thinking about starting a new FireRed game and, unlike the rest of the games, finishing it. Problem is, I can't decide whether to start with Bulbasaur or Squirtle. I'm saving Charmander for another game, and it's about an even split between the two of them as to how much I like the other two.

Everything takes forever to level up in HeartGold. That's only of the only things about the game I don't really like.
I've heard you can take advantage of the game's clock to have a 100% chance of certain people on your phone accepting a battle when you call them, but I'm not sure I can do that very well.

So in a fit of boredom, I made a "top 50" list of Pokémon I like. The Kanto Pokémon are even more heavily represented in it than I thought. Out of those 50, 19 had evolutionary forms from the first 151. I knew it was going to be the biggest portion of the list, but I didn't quite expect it to be that high.
Is this a bad thing? I guess it's like this because I'm used to the aesthetics of Generation I. For example, a significant portion of the Pokémon I like are the big, tough-looking Godzilla-movie-style ones, which Kanto has a lot of. It also seems to have a lot to do with how recently I played the games. I haven't played the Sinnoh games in over a year, and I haven't really played the Hoenn games in an even longer time. But I've played HeartGold and White a lot over the past year, so the Kanto, Johto, and Unova Pokémon are still fresh in my mind.

Oh, okay. I didn't count legendaries in my list. If I added all the legendaries that I like to it, Johto would actually be about even with Kanto. I like all of the Johto Legendaries, and Celebi is my favorite cute Legendary, along with Jirachi.

If I took the Gen. V Pokémon off of my list, I think they'd be replaced with Scyther and Buizel. But it's kind of a tough choice.

There was one guy making a fangame on the TV Tropes Pokémon thread who themed his Legendaries after the PokéGod rumors.
The main thing that bugs me about fangames and what not is they try too hard to darken up the story with death and enslavement. "People send their kids out to capture wild animals as a way to control the population" cannot work as it is now, and sometimes it just gets stupid when overused.

I haven't seen too many fangames, so I haven't seen that particular trend that much. But I agree, grimdark Pokémon does get a bit annoying, and I don't really enjoy it that much in the first place.
Fortunately, as far as I know, this fangame isn't a grimdark one. It's about the same tone as the regular games, if I recall correctly.

I'm thinking about an idea I want to use in a fanfic or a Pokémon Tabletop Adventures campaign. The premise of the story would be that one (or possibly more) of the players' Pokémon is a human who got into an accident. Once this has all been figured out, the goal would be to figure out how the accident happened, try to keep the same thing from happening to everyone else, and if possible, reverse the transformation.
Problem is, if it's a game, I want to be one of the players (and be uncreative and do a character based on myself, but that's another story). However, this is making me sound a bit more like the GM than a player.

Sounds like a splendid idea! We should also create a Feraligatr/Hitmonchan hybrid to facilitate Punch-Out! crossovers.
The idea of hybrid Pokémon in that sense is pretty interesting, though since there are thousands of possible combinations, it'd be a little difficult to do every one of them. I am oddly interested in seeing what Arbok hybridizations look like, but I don't know what to hybridize them with.
