Put it this way, a large segment of the US population would have serious reservations about voting for anybody belonging to any religious movement outside mainstream Protestant Christianity, and more Americans would rather have a Muslim president than an atheist one, in spite of all the Islamophobia you hear about.

Mitt's done pretty well so far and it's not like the other Republican hopefuls aren't (or weren't, in the case of some dropping out) ye' ol' Conservative Christians.
I think it just goes to show that these polls on who Americans would vote for are all fine and good until reality comes and hits it with a rod.
