Well, I think it's mostly due to fear of girls (something that younguns like Ed Edd and Eddy are) and the fact that all 3 of them (except Ed in some cases) are smitten by Nazz, so 3 trailer park girls throwing themselves at them all the time isn't what they are searching for.

That or the Kankers have a reputation of inspiring fear amongst the Eds.

Well I'd like to think they are middle school / elementary aged as opposed to High Schoolers.

Sounds like the OVA, if only because you mentioned Ayeka's father.

I think Tenchi Universe had a fairly similar plot up until the last little bit there.
