Movies' primary usefulness is as loss-leading awareness for properties which power other, more profitable parts of a marketing machine. At least for Disney, anyway.

(to clarify: big box-office revenues don't necessarily mean huge profits)

So... Disney's business model is making TV shows so other companies will pay them for airtime, and makinng movies (and to a lesser extent TV shows) so video game, toy, and clothig companiwes will pay them licensing fees?

That sounds rather unseemly, tbh. Like they're the corporation most culpable for a consumer capitalist society where folk culture has been replaced with intellectual property and the monopoly rent-seeking that follows it.

    The sadness will last forever.
It sucks that a movie's success is judged by the money it makes instead of how good the story is. Same with TV shows except with ratings or the network's views on it.

So I dreamed Haven was running a contest for some radio station that involved answering trivia questions on an Android app

Also the radio station had bumpers by Casey Kasem, but they were all recordings...he never seemed to do anything live

  • My dreams exceed my real life
I wonder how big a group of followers I could get if I peddled fascism via current left-wing rhetoric techniques.

"In this blogpost, I want to propose not a race realism, or, god forbid, a racism, but a weird racism. I intend to radicalize the works of the great race theorists of times past, drawing out what most suits our current times and pit it against the still brilliant but dimmer "race realism" of people like Steve Sailer and Razib Khan. In doing so, I hope to provide an ideology capable of establishing neocameralism"

    Yeah I could do that.

This must have been how L. Ron Hubbard got his start.

Which reminds me, I need to make #LacanOrYudkowsky a thing on twitter at some point.

Buys into bizarre pseudoscience where ideas are parasitic

    Has a cult

    Reactionary followers

    Is harming autistic people.

Imparts teachings in short lectures that one has never quite read enough of.

Started out as a deeply lonely alienated person.

Claims to mathematical precision, in reality not so much.

Thinks they can tell physicists what their discoveries mean without input from said physicists.

I could give a legit philosophical answer to this, but this question is too funny for me to be serious about it.

    oh right

i know for a fact that my university's Freudian theory professor would contest a few of those, but you will definitely have read more Lacan than me so idk

as far as i've read Yudkowsky's math seems more meaningful than Lacan's

in the sense that Lacan's math is usually barely relevant to the subject matter under discussion, as far as i can tell

Lacan, at least, can be taken as a very impressive troll. Maybe.

Or is that Badiou? I confuse the two.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Wait, no, that's Badiou. I think that Lacan was actually taking himself seriously.

    Maybe...
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Lacan: Freudian weird graph lecturer guy.

Badiou: Math Platonist set theory book guy.
  • honestly i have yet to see an antinatalist who has addressed the contention that, if happiness is meaningless, suffering must be as well.

and until one of them does to my satisfaction, i shall pay them no mind.

i don't think Lacan was trolling

i do think he liked to play the mystic and made his work deliberately inaccessible

say what you will about Yudkowsky, he tries to make his ideas fairly accessible and uses plain English
