Yes, but also they kinda provide electricity for Protoss stuff, if memory serves, Protoss stuff can only be built from within a Pylon's zone off influence (basically a circular parameter around the Pylon) and if the Pylon gets destroyed, the buildings start producing much slower.

You need more pylons for additional units (like farms), but you don't get a speed boast from overlapping pylons.
