  • Isn't that the cover to his first album?

I am 99% sure that is the cover to his first album.

If you were playing, like, some potentially embarrassing game like Unicorn Attack or whatever it's called over at Cartoon Network, I could see that

    But TF2?
  • Aesthetically that Moby picture looks like his ninth album, Wait For Me

Look at that juvenile line art in the volcano, the lack of appeal in the angles of the mountains, the variable distance of the horizon.

Most people space lines better than that, and most people subconsciously have a consistently distant horizon.

The more I look at it, the less it looks like something that was drawn with no effort.  Something drawn lazily in five minutes would have more consistency and better proportions.

It takes effort to make something that irregular, because the human mind is subconsciously driven to pattern-making.

Basically, what I'm saying is that either Moby isn't human, or he was trying hard to draw something that looked simple and juvenile while lacking the consistency and regularity of juvenile doodles.

Basically, it's not fake juvenile doodle art, it's a mimicry of fake juvenile doodle art.

At least the comic strip I saw him draw was pretty bad in the art department.

I think I figured out why I get like this though, while my mind's been pondering the subject.

Maybe a little of it might be cuz I don't want my things to be ruined by showing them to my family (this is what almost killed my interest entirely in Doctor Who) but I think it might be cuz I'm scared they'll think what I like is stupid, weird, not appropriate, etc. etc.

Wait, should this go in the anxiety thread? Bluh.

About two years ago, in order to fulfill the art part of my degree plan, I took Painting I. What an awesome class, and the professor instructing it, as I found out was a combat illustrator too (during Vietnam) so we really connected and I learned a ton from that man. Anyway one day he drags me to his studio and shows me this incredible abstract piece he was working on that blended 20th-turn-of-the-century abstract aesthetic with Native American style architecture and art. Of course this guy has a lifetime of experience behind him to which he invested into this particular piece that's taken him over two years to complete; and it really stunned me whenever he said, "I think I could probably get one to two thousand for this."

One of my mom's friends is a record label hotshot in New York City who purchases high-dollar art and the thing he's proudest of is this laughable mess on canvas that he paid well over $100,000 for because it was painted by John Mellencamp. Guys like Mellencamp and Moby here are automatically taken serious for a medium that isn't even their specialty (or that they display any real skill in) just because they're famous musicians. That just bugs the hell out of me.

I think at that point, you're not paying for the art so much as the name and the ability to say "oh yea, John Mellencamp painted that".

I don't think most art critics would take such things seriously, but I don't know any art critics, so I might be wrong.

Part of me wants to quit my Physics class.

Usually it's the whiny part of me that wants to do nothing but play solitaire and sleep, or the irrational part of me that exaggerates things but is willing to work with a good attitude the next morning.

This time it's the quiet part of me that tells me to calm down and stops me from doing self-destructive things.  That guide who watches the rest of me is the one saying it.

The irrational part of me is screaming that if I quit Physics that it means that I'm a fool who can't do basic math and is useless without a calculator; and that I can't give up now when I am actually capable of doing the class.

I can do the class, it's just hard.

Should I take the hard work and become a stronger person, or should I save myself the exhaustion, overwork, and pain?

    I'm leaning towards the former.

I don't think most art critics would take such things seriously, but I don't know any art critics, so I might be wrong.

When it comes to "absolutely useless people" and "sponges on society", not much comes close to an art critic. These are the people define what "high art" is. I don't totally blame these particular folks for what they're doing, because they're being enabled by society to do so. I have to admit that if I was offered a position to be paid a rich living wage to discuss the likes of the mild nuances of a turd on a plate presented at an art show, I'd most likely do it.

To me art is defined by appeal. That's a really subjective definition, I know, but there's a lot of stuff out there that a lot of people genuinely like (and are not told to like.)  Like Robert Crumb's work, for instance. People really loved his stuff like "Keep on Truckin'" when it came out because it had broad appeal. Norman Rockwell's work is the same. Some of the shit being churned out today -- one that comes to mind is a horrifically carved statue of an anime character (like how an 8 year old DA artist would draw one) shooting out jizz that is swirling around him and which recently sold for a heinous amount of cash -- does not fit this description. At all.

I'm studying my stuff for a test tomorrow and I'm going to drag you all into this

so this computer is executing a program that is 50% multiply operations, 20% divide operations, and the remaining 30% is every other kind of operation.

Obtain the speedup factor gained if the divide operations run at 3 times faster.

Sounds like something the Superflats would do to criticize anime.

Of course, I'm pretty sure they don't even consider themselves true art, so...

  • no sir, I don't like it

Amdahl's law is what I need to use here

and I think this is how you use it

    speedup factor == [ .2 (the volume of instructions) / 3 (# of times faster to run) ] + [.3 + .5]

I need to read up some more on this. Maybe I'm doing it wrong

The first three are really quite lovely to me, if extremely simple, but the the last one is...? I'm not sure whether it's actually just one colour painted matte (plausible) or whether the photograph is missing some nuance in the colour and brushstrokes (also plausible).
