I don't think that one should beat around the bush when quoting someone saying something offensive, because knowing what the word was and acknowledging what was said helps us understand why something was hurtful and helps take that power away from the people doing the hurting.
But in pretty much any other context... there's no excuse. And this is yet another example of people not understanding the big red lines right in front of their feet.
