most media lays out a set of ideas, then the reader/watcher/player approaches them and puts them together how they see fit. Now, the author most likely has an intention for how you put that all together, but you can do it however you want
but with Undertale, if you try to do what Toby doesn't want you to do, it actively tries its hardest to fuck you and make sure that you have a bad time. it may be the first piece of self-defending media.
I can't think of anything else that does such a thing.
and I would think that such a thing would be unique to video games, due to the interactivity of the medium
like, you couldnt have a book that becomes more difficult to read then gives you the Willy Wonka's You Stole The Fizzy Lifting Drinks tirade if you go about thinking about it the wrong way
I guess you could have that in a chose your own adventure or gamebook or whatever and probably one or two has had something like that at some point, but not to that extent
No, but I feel like there's probably been at least an attempt at something similar before. Few things are truly unique from whole cloth.
Arguably stuff like The Stanley Parable does it, sort of, but there's no "out" there. You're going to be frustrated no matter what you do.
ok yeah yeah there are no new ideas under the sun, but really this does strike me as at least highly original even if due to the sheer amount of things out there there has been something like it before
I suppose I have mostly been thinking of the game in comparison to other narrative-driven indies that try to somehow trip up the player.
I think Undertale's take on that structure is unique, and so is its comparative benign-ness (stuff like OneShot and even the otherwise good OFF is incredibly cheap in the ways it tries to make you feel like an awful person).

how very strange.
What about Gibson's Agrippa (A Book of the Dead)?
The text was only supposed to be read once, so it corrupted itself when it was run.
remember how fast the homestuck fandom disintegrated during the first gigapause?
once people find another flavor of the week, if their previous flavor isnt still in stock, they'll move on
most of them
a small, more hardcore and dedicated fanbase is still left behind, but those aren't the ones who engage in really embarrassing/awful discourse about it generally
man sans is cool and he's a plot important character but i wish there was more fanwork for like...every other character. like almost every undertale comic is sans related in some way
alphys and asgore and undyne are important characters toooo. even like monster kid is there for like the entire waterfall part but there's no fanart for him or anything

I love things like that that interact with the reader through the medium itself

The story goes that you need seven souls to break that barrier.
The story goes that the First Child was reborn to finish their task, whatever that might be.
You see where I'm going with this.
