Poppy O'Possum counts. Beatriz Overseer counts. Digger technically counts, but that's only one funny animal and, I repeat, it is one of the best damn webcomics I've ever read and the lack of reaction when I posted it that one time was disheartening.

I can't think of anything more in the funny animal webcomic vein

This is true, though I would expand it to several other fields, such as having a near encylopedic knowledge of late 70's/80's post punk and industrial.
