straub wrote candle cove but i saw that as an /x/ creepypasta and didn't know it was him until years later
so my exposure to his stuff was checkerboard nightmare, a webcomic about meta jokes and calling other webcomics bad; starslip crisis, a star trek parody (with some horror, but that was easily understood as part of the star trek); and chainsawsuit, which is just three panel lo-fi jokes
and then i read broodhollow and found out he was candle cove and i'm like, shit, why doesn't he do this instead of funnies
He is a pretty solid horror writer, yes. His comedy can be kind of bitter, but his creepy stuff hits all the right notes. I just wish there were some equivalent in web-media terms to that heavy, almost decadent kind of horror that you get from writers like Ligotti and Carter and even Samuels when he's on point.
