  i have never known this to do anything but honestly i don't know what my computer is doing half the time

  It's usually looking for known software conflicts or missing drivers/codecs.

  
  

  Needless to say, most reasons your program will crash have nothing to do with this.  It will often search interminably, to the point of causing a bluescreen.

  It's one of those things that's demonstrated itself to be so unreliable that I always just click "Cancel" instead of letting it waste my time.
