today i argued with someone who tried to tell me that 50 cent's Curtis is a better album than kanye west's Graduation because the former sold better in international markets.
this has little relevance to what we're talking about, but can you believe that shit
this is gonna sound kind of petulant but 'tries too hard' is probably my least favourite criticism
what does it actually mean?
it's not a criticism, just an observation.
though I think Korn does the tryhard thing better, maybe because they are more goofy and charming whilst Xiu Xiu is more po faced about the whole thing
I like Xiu Xiu, and I think that part of their appeal is that they try too hard and when they actually succeed they can be really mortifying and alienating while also being kind of morbidly funny. Like, I get saying they are more po-faced in their approach than Korn are, but they really aren't so much devoid of humour as that they blend their distinctly grim sense of humour directly into very serious songs. Take something like "Vulture Piano" with the nervous, goofy lyrical asides, or the deranged put-downs in "Pox".
