Some of my friend swear by it, but I've never played. Been doing some 4th edition. Thinking about starting a GURPS campaign, since I have tons of books for it.

3.5 evidently made the prestige classes too powerful, and Pathfinder addresses that.
4th changed a considerable amount of rule. It's the easiest to get into, though lacks a great deal of the character customization of the older editions.
I know you do, I just sort of find it annoying when some people, somewhere, apparently decide "hey, you know what would make this thing better? FUCKING PONIES" and then they do it.
My personal opinion of Pathfinder is that it had some good ideas but it doesn't really fix the main problem with 3.5, where ultimately you have people who warp reality and people who hit things with sticks. I may be missing something, though. 4th didn't really have that problem, although it's such a different beast I don't know if it's fair to make the comparison. I've had fun with both, though I think I prefer 4th's tactical approach more.

"And because they need to be mentioned in EVERY TOPIC, some crazed fan also made rules for pony characters."
I've seen these, they're actually the best attempts at representing Ponies in D&D that I've seen.
"My personal opinion of Pathfinder is that it had some good ideas but it doesn't really fix the main problem with 3.5, where ultimately you have people who warp reality"
Here is my (woefully unfinished) character sheet if anyone cares. It's not stats and junk, none of y'all wanna read that, just story stuff and spells known.

Name: Tala Glaye Race: Changeling (Half-Hag) Class: Summoner Alignment: Chaotic Neutral Level: 1 Experience:0/1000 Size: Medium Humanoid Gender: Female Age: 20 Height: 5'1'' Weight: 102 lbs. Hair: Pitch Black Eyes: Gold, with large irises. Deity: Tala is not particularly religious. But identifies somewhat with the goddess Desna. Homeland: Languages: Common, Draconic Money: 10 G Appearance: Short, for a human. Short, rounded face, small nose. Possessing of the same stunning looks most changelings have. Tala is muscular for her race, and it shows, but she is still physically weak compared to most other creatures. Personality: Tala has been described as "forceful". She's willing to use almost any means necessary to get what she wants. Up to and including seduction and nonlethal violence at the hands of her golem-like Eidolon, Gyre. However, she is a good person at heart and generally puts the needs of those few people she considers friends on par with her own. Backstory: The bastard child of a green hag and a human wizard, Tala's life was strange from the beginning. Her adoptive parents raised her until she turned fifteen and her odd powers began manifesting themselves more noticably. She was promptly forced out of her home against her wishes, and left without putting up much resistance. Seekingcompanionship, she learned the ways of the summoner from an elderly man named Chaim, who she studied under for several years. After his passing-on, Tala and Gyre struck out on their own, Tala still feeling the wanderlust common to all changelings, and Gyre following his mistress wherever she may roam.

@Justice: Note how I said balancing. Nobody is horrible broken in 4th edition at low or high levels. Of course Clerics are not as good as Bards early on, but no class is horribly weak.
It was fairly generic, being like an MMO. Although one could argue Wizards were worse. Free Magic Missile(so you have to hit... big deal) every turn? Nice. I didn't like the HP system though. Felt too... unfair.

In 4?
4 seems MUCH more fair to me.
Spell casters starting with 4HP is always something of a joke. In our old 3.5 game, we'd joke with our spell-caster that we should tie a goblin to his back and double his HP.
More like you couldn't really control your HP at all. You don't roll, you just get a generic number that could be considered low to the rest of the case.
Well, actually, it doesn't. You see, their HP will always be near equal.
When comparing a Fighter and a Wizard, it's possible for a Wizard to actually get better HP than a Fighter because of bad rolls.
This is impossible in 4th Edition because HP is completely fixed. One character will never gain more HP naturally than another. Outside of items, this is entirely impossible. Of course, seeing a Barbarian with less HP than a Wizard, yeah, right, but it's not impossible.
In addition, in an MMORPG, you generally are given stats, with few weaknesses, not to mention, you don't heavily choose what you level up, it just goes with you, often pumping up most of your character so evenly to the point that it feels less unique.
You see, every level, you gain a point in each of your six stats. Every two levels, you increase your modifiers. There's still some distributed points, of course, but it feels too automatic and not like you really choose how to pump up your characters.
Every adventure is sort of like going out on a raid in WoW, basically.
I don't play WoW.
Isn't the abilities/at-wills/encounters/dailies you choose along with your equipment what defines your character anyway, and not how high your STR or CON is?
I felt the stats are just there to get in the way and being streamlined in 4th actually helped cut away the annoying crap.
And those abilities are fairly limited on their own, too. The idea that you suddenly refresh these powers easily is not much different from how easy it is to do in an MMORPG.
The stats are a key crux of DnD too. All versions.
And when all your base stats update in a general way, too many fighters tend to look alike. It does have options for being more unique, but some things are just so much better, that variety tends to be an illusion.
People want more options. 4th Edition is much more limiting. They even reduced spells/weapons/the ability to be more broken, and so on.
It's no surprise that people want more options, and not less. It's kind of a step backwards. The game is definitely more balanced, but not heavy on options.

well fine then, Tno. Crush my hopes and dreams why don't you. ;-;
Just kidding, I have a great Charisma score. So I can just persuade you all to start playing.
Charisma is a great skill if you're a Summoner like mois.
Let's you summon gigantic centipedes and devils and elementals and demon chickens and....

It's an offshoot of Dungeons & Dragons for people who thought the rule changes from 3.5 to 4e were horrible.
I never played either 3.5 or 4e, but Pathfinder looks to be awesome.

*shrug*
I've not played any yet (as I said before, I am doing character creation for my very first game of Pathfinder as we speak) so I cannot comment.
Seems fun, though. Especially since "summon things to murder my enemies dead" is something I enjoy doing.

well
I like spells?
