  iirc when Martinet first auditioned for the role he put on a really gruff voice, and they asked him to make it more friendly and fun

  I know of one British guy who say mehrio, but that's the only person I can think of off the top of my head.

  Well, he says  it's because his grandfather's family was from Italy and that's how they pronounce it there, but since I have never been to italy, I can't really say whether that has any truth to it whatsoever.

  It's an Italian name, and Italian treats all "a"s as "soft" "a"s. "Mary oh" is a mispronunciation.
  
  If there's some English-speaking accent that has no soft A sound, then perhaps you can consider it a fault of accent, of course.

  Merry, Mary, and marry are the same to me, but the "h" in "Mehrio" makes a difference in the way I read it, somehow :V

  In Metal Gear Solid 2, the Colonel is replaced by an AI doppelganger. The "La Li Lu Le Lo" chant in the video is presumably a joke about this being the doppelganger rather than the real thing.

  On that note, if you would like to read an in depth two part discussion/analysis entitled "Why Does Wario Fart?," there is this. I would recommend it, actually. I thought it was pretty interesting, especially in how it sheds light on some ways that Wario has been portrayed differently in different parts of the world.
