Watched a video featuring all the times Catwoman gets called a bitch or threatened sexually in Arkham City

Which begs the question: why is every criminal in Gotham a crazy violent gangmember/rapist or a measly political prisoner? You'd think there'd be some criminals who don't sign up under one of the resident psychos and just want to get through the stupid, stupid situation without dying. You hear about some of them in the supplementary material, but would it really be so hard to put some of that into the game? and for that matter, why are all of the gangmembers in Arkham super sexist while fighting Catwoman? You'd think some of them would have other motives. Like getting back at Batman, who's way out of their league, by killing his sometimes girlfriend. Or extorting all of her ill-gotten gains from her. Or maybe they're gay/ace.

What am I even doing? This is a series that has you give concussions to the mentally ill, who all happen to be raving bloodthirsty psychopaths. Asking for nuance is like trying to squeeze milk from a stone.

Arkham is basically the videogame version of the Marvel Movie franchise. At first, it was relatively contained in its universe, just adding enough characters from other works to make sure that the plot functions. And then the next installment adds so many characters and asides to other stuff that you can't even keep track of them.

Arkham City had, what, three main villains? One of whom practically comes out of nowhere? And that's ignoring the other half-dozen other villains trying to get their piece of the batpie

Well, they COULD be. There is such a thing as being insecure/closeted, and I doubt Gotham's crime scene is conducive to LGBT acceptance in general.

Aside from the aforementioned Catwoman dialogue, the only major death in Asylum was a woman, and the only non-villain death in City was also a woman. When you're sent on a quest to find Freeze's wife, the criminals guarding her are all like "durr hurr, once she defrosts we'll bang her brains out, durr hurr". Harley's possible pregnancy is treated like a joke, and there's some evidence that it was a miscarriage caused by, erm, superhero related injuries, never mind the bit where you can gag and ungag her as you please while she's tied up.

Also, the entire third act of Arkham Asylum could have been avoided if Batman hadn't been a dick to Poison Ivy (kindness would have also undone half of the plot of City, but that's neither here nor there). And I haven't even gotten into the design choices.

So yeah. Arkham has Marvel beat on that front

Now, getting to the design choices, besides the obvious things like Catwoman's absolute cleavage and Poison Ivy's natural tendency to nudism (apparently, Arkham couldn't get her to wear more than that jacket, which raises the question of why she keeps it in City but w/e). It's that all the females in the game have a bad case of generic face.

I remember seeing a tumblr post once about how, in a trailer or something for League of Legends, the game's trademark muscly guy with a sword (Garen, I believe) was given a fairly realistic CGI treatment while his female counterpart was more along the lines of Elsa. Same issue here. Design team basically settled on "sexy Halloween costumes" for most of the females, Dr. Young from Arkham aside, and their faces are basically "generic hollywood model". Compare the designs for Batman or Penguin or Joker. Or even Aaron Cash, for crying out loud.
