Since people asked:

All color CRTs have a plate in the front called a "shadow mask", which keeps the electron beams from illuminating adjacent pixels and causing a blurry picture. It's made out of an alloy that can become magnetized and cause swirling color patterns, due to the electron beams falling out of alignment; degaussing the screen reorients the magnetic field on the shadow mask in regards to Earth's magnetic field (it can't remove it completely) and removes the patterns.

Typically, you only need to do it if you move a monitor or turn it on its side, but most TVs and monitors did it for you on power-up anyway.

The funniest thing to do with the degauss button was to press it in front of someone who didn't know what it did and watch them freak out as the picture on the screen went all distorted.

Then once you've explained to them that it's harmless, they try it and nothing happens because well, you just did it, there's nothing for it to degauss now.

Heheheh. That and the coil is usually inline with a PTC thermistor that keeps it from burning up; it'll be weak, if it works at all, until the thermistor cools off.
