I realized Gyarados was only super-powerful on D/P because I was facing pokemon who weren't attacking his weakness and Gyarados was 14 levels higher and better trained than all of them (lolvitamins).
Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
Is it odd that out of my seven personal favorite types, two generally have better defense than offense, while my preferred battling style is a heavy offense? The two odd-ones-out types in question are Poison and Grass. Then again, I usually factor in aesthetics and how they've been in battles against the computer more over how well they fare competitively when I pick my favorites.
It would make sense to not bring legendaries to a common fight.
Learning though, that a Beedrill will never be able to naturally fight off 85% of the pokemon at the same level as it just kind of sucks, and that if you are weak to Earthquake you will lose, a lot.
I like the aspect of pokemon where you don't have to run pokemon you don't like to win (except when there was only 151 and you HAD to run Golem to counter Zapdos etc.) but the fact that so many of them are permanently below average that it's almost stupid to even try.
Like I said earlier, I'm not exactly a big fan of the metagame, and if I ever did try it out, my perfectionism would drive me insane. As such, I usually just sort of go the Karen route: try to get a general ides of what my favorite Pokémon are best at and bring out those strengths. I do EV train on occasion and try to avoid natures that decrease the most important stat, but I've tried IV resetting before, and it was too much trouble to be really worth it.
I've never really battled or traded with anyone before, anyway. Plus, most of my friends who play Pokémon aren't into the metagame, either, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.
I make a point of not playing with "competitive trainers". I have before, and there is no quicker way to frustrate yourself than to lose repeatedly against someone you can't beat due to a lopsided metagame. Especially when the only way you could beat them is by trading in your Pokemon for ones that you don't particularly care about, and then spending ludicrous amounts of time training them, resetting IVs, and a ton of other junk.
Just until a pokemon of mine gets hit with a horrible nature making it's SPD so low that things it should be able to outspeed can hit it...like an Onix.
Actually I think it's my perfectionism that ruins games for me.
1) You can only catch one Pokemon per area (eg one on Route 1, one in Viridian Forest, one in Cerulean Gym (I love bugs in RBY :D))
2) You have to catch the first Pokemon you see in each area and no others. Knock it out? Tough luck you get no Pokemon for that area (although if you see a shiny and it isn't the first Pokemon in the area, you can catch that and just never use)
3) When a Pokemon faints, it counts as dead. You can not use it again. Ever
4) You have to give each Pokemon you catch a nickname. One you find special to you in some way
5) There are many variant rules which you can apply as you'd like. I am not going to list them though
This really makes you start caring for the Pokemon and start ignoring the metagame in favour of not letting the Pokemon die. It also greatly increases the difficulty of the game as Pokemon faint a LOT more than you realize
Edit: And how the fuck did I forget that fourth core rule?
Remember back in the 50s when they'd record like Elvis singing YOU AIN'T NOTHIN BUT A HOUND DOG and then they'd turn the record over and reverse it and it was all NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP NYERP and people were all like, "That is actually the voice of Satan coming from that song."
On another subject, I seem to be in one of those moods where I want to come up with ideas for Pokémon. I have these brainstorming urges every now and again for some reason, and there's usually something in particular I want to base them on. This time it's cetaceans. We only have two of them, and one's a Legendary.
What do you guys think would be a good type for a sperm whale, non-Legendary orca, and a classic bottlemose dolphin aside from Water? I found a concept sketch for an Ice/Steel sperm whale submarine Fakemon that looked pretty cool, but I'm a little worried that I might not find a good way to cover its double weaknesses if it existed. I also think that Dark or Fighting would be appropriate for the orca, since they're sort of like pack hunters.
I've heard a lot of people say that Psychic would be a good type for the dolphin, and I kind of agree with that. Apart from that, this might seem a bit odd, but given their newfound reputation for less than savory behaviors, Dark would seem to make sense for them, too.

Triple types seem like they'd be a bit difficult to keep up with.
But at the same time, that might mean the metagame would become so complicated that no one would even bother doing it anymore. And our nefarious plan would be a success! HAHAHAHA! (/silly mode)
Anyhow, fire whales and space dragon whales sound pretty creative. Not sure what particular whale they'd be based on, though.
^Triple weakness would be x8.
After playing with my calculator for a bit, I found out there are 33 possible triple weaknesses and 80 possible triple resistances.
The Kanto gyms in the Johto games weren't quite in the same order as the first games. I think you had a bit more freedom as to what gyms you could choose first, but you start out in Vermillion after the Elite Four and not Pallet. So in that respect, I can understand the Kanto gyms all being around the same level except for Blue's. But yeah, there probably should not be a 20-level gap between Blue and Red.
It would be nice if there was a Pokémon game where the Gym Leaders could be challenged in any order with their teams and levels being adjusted accordingly. The only problems I could see with that are that Psychic and Ghost Pokémon seem to make too easy first gyms. But for now, I guess that's what Tabletop Adventures is for.

Anyhow, I'm thinking about nicknames again. I'm having trouble thinking of names for a Totodile. The names I'm leaning toward the most at the moment are Finn for a male and Makara for a female, but I'm still looking to see if there's anything else I like better.
I suspect that Sobek and Louis are relatively popular names, but they don't appeal to me as much for some reason.
For some reason, Tsunami always struck me as more of a feminine name. Mist is pretty interesting as a name for Totodile, though.
This is actually pretty good, because I'm mostly looking for feminine names. I've since gotten Marina and Ammit (yes, the soul-eating monster who punishes the wicked in Egyptian mythology is a girl) through further research, but apart from that, I'm stumped.
...I wonder what the laws in the Pokemon world are about interspecies relations? Obviously something like going with a Mightyena would still be illegal, but what about Gardevoir? Alakazam? Both highly intelligent psychic types...

^^I should've known that subject would come up eventually.
It's certainly a possible topic for philosophical discussion, but not the kind of philosophical discussion I want to have. I'm afraid I have to wholeheartedly disapprove of the practice. Let's just say for a trainer, it's unprofessional at best.

When I learned about EVs, IVs, type placement, move placement and even placement tiers.
I would honestly argue that the metagame sorta misses the entire point of Pokemon.
But none of you would care, so....
