up until like a year or so ago i thought that 'a couple' just meant 'a few' rather than specifically meaning two
i used it that way for 20 odd years and nobody either noticed or bothered to correct me

I used to use "guy" as a gender-neutral term.
I still use "dude" as a gender-neutral emphatic, in fact.
