Your honor, my client stands accused of shooting the plaintiff

But it may be asked: When my client pulled the trigger of his gun did he know it would go off? You see your honor, as human beings, we never see causal connections at work, but only see the constant conjunction of events. We see a billiard ball bouncing off another billiard ball so often we assume that this must happen, but why do we assume this? Mere psychological habit? This is no basis for knowledge your honor. Induction is circular. We believe it works because of induction. A proof so circular and suspect is no proof at all. No, while my client may have pulled the trigger he did not KNOW that the gun would fire, or that the bullet would harm the plaintiff. I urge you to give him a minimum sentence.

The defense rests.
