DKR has noticeably shorter tracks, true. If I remember right, Mario Kart 64's were significantly longer. That said, I almost like the shorter tracks because it is that much easier to replay all of the courses in a row, which is something I like doing in Diddy Kong Racing for some strange reason. I think part of it might be that I just like how each track in a cup follows the same theme.
I also kind of appreciate how the items in DKR are a bit less luck based, but your mileage may vary about that. As far as course design, character variety, and production values go, I think the later Mario Karts beat out DKR, but I am not sure if any Mario Kart track has ever gotten stuck in my head like this one has.

I played all the old DOOM levels for the first time in years not too long ago. Disappointingly short, though still fun.
