What I'm saying is: should I want to go there?

    from what I understand the crime rate pretty much everywhere in the United States has plummeted since the 90s, New York especially since the crowdedness means it had more room to fall, but housing there has only gotten more expensive.

    I mean, It's a cool city with a lot of neat places, but you shouldn't feel obligated to want to go there.

     For the first one generally yes, but you can also find a lot of good hole int the wall places with decent prices even in the more expensive parts of NYC like Manhattan, definitely yes to the second one and as for the third crime rates have generally been in steady decline, but I'm not sure how the overall rate of crime in NYC is relative to other places, so can't really comment on that.

    I went there once when I was younger - just before high school. It was OK, but not really my cup of tea.

    I went to NYC back in 1999, and it was OK. Definitely way too much to see in one day, but that's true of a lot of places.

    My father drove us through there like once.

    It was alright I guess.
