I want to watch Sabrina: The Animated Series

  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
    Sure, why not
  • We can do anything if we do it together.
    Go ahead.
  • I can't get over how "they tried" it is, and how B-tier it is, and how it is the last show DIC produced that was at all watchable
  • honestly you can pretend that DIC ceased to exist in like 2000 and there would have been nothing of value lost
  • I'm starting to wonder if this show was Disney's last (and seemingly only) ditch attempt to make something of DIC
  • Disney didn't even want DIC, it came along with the rest of the Capital Cities/ABC portfolio
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
how did anybody stand to watch this thing

the backgrounds make everything look like it was made from cardboard

the character designs are nice, even if whoever DIC contracted to do the animation didn't seem really able to swing them properly
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
how did Savage Steve Holland stand to work on this thing
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
well when this show was on tv i wasn't paying attention to backgrounds in cartoons

still largely don't, unless someone points them out or we get a lengthy shot of them without any action, because i can't focus on the backgrounds and the characters at the same time, i'd have to keep pausing stuff, and you can't pause a tv show, or couldn't back then anyway

so i would have figured backgrounds aren't so important

that said even when i was a kid i thought the live action Sabrina series was better than the cartoon; the live action show was witty, the cartoon was a bit generic
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
the whole idea of "Sabrina: The Animated Series" was a bit behind the times by 1999 anyway, but then again, only Disney and DIC thought those were still a good idea (and guess who was better at them)
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
and DIC are the people who thought giving us a cartoon based on Ripley's Believe it...or Not! was a good idea
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
provided I wanted to walk into Mordor DIC's building I totally could have pitched them a series based on, like, Tupperware
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
at the risk of sounding kind of tasteless, i liked Sabrina:TAS more than 101
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
the reason I started caring about Sabrina:TAS is because I read that it shared a bunch of writers with 101

I imagine Disney dumped the ones who did less-than-stellar work onto this show (because DIC)
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
one of the ones who stayed at the main Disney Television Animation was Jess Winfield
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
the animation in this show is really stiff

at least 101's was INTERESTING, whether or not it was substandard (like it was half the time) or actually well-done
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
also it had better voice acting
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i started caring about it because it was ostensibly based on a show i liked

between this and 101 i guess that goes some way towards explaining why for the longest time i thought unfaithful adaptations were inherently terrible
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
i have come to terms with 101

"WAH THEY SCREWED UP THEIR ONLY SHOT AT DOING A ONE HUNDRED AND ONE DALMATIANS SHOW" slowly became "who fucking cares, the good episodes are solid Bs and the books exist, as does fanfic"
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
also Sabrina, the Teenage Witch has had many more forms than The Hundred and One Dalmatians, the latter of which suffers from being closely associated with (and effectively owned by) Disney

i notice other people on this site (not just you) seem to care about animation quality a lot more than i ever have... often i just don't even SEE it

what i noticed when i was, i guess i must have been 9 or 10 years old i think when i was watching these, was that the dogs in 101 didn't look like they did in the movie, but the people in Sabrina couldn't be expected to look like they did in the live action show so i let them off for that

(i know that Sabrina:TAS was *not*, in actual fact, an adaptation of the live action comedy and that the 1970s cartoon and the comics existed, but when i was a kid i didn't know that)
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i'm getting a bit defensive on behalf of a show i haven't watched in the longest time and can barely remember, and that's stupid

ijbm that i have no idea what 'quality' is supposed to mean anymore, all these shows look like garbage now but they must have had some redeeming qualities since i was able to enjoy them once, and this wasn't one of my favourites but it wasn't the worst

it's miles better than the 1970s Sabrina cartoon, anyway
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
you're neglecting to mention which studio made the 1970s Sabrina show ^<^

no this show isn't complete garbage but there are better things I could be watching
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
what other shows look like garbage to you now though
  • Sup bitches, witches, Haters, and trolls.
i liked the sabrina cartoon but i was a dumb kid

i even liked the star wars prequels which are apparently an affront to god the way people talk about them

    Filmation according to Wikipedia.

Why, should i have mentioned it?

Well, like, garbage was probably overly-harsh but, Hercules, Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, Bonkers, Aladdin, Timon & Pumbaa, 101, Gummi Bears, Chip n' Dale, Doug, PB&J Otter, The Little Mermaid, also Tiny Toon Adventures, I Am Weasel, Tom and Jerry Kids, Scooby-Doo, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, i watched a lot of crap when i was a kid which i assume most people would regard as garbage
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
i barely remember anything about the show from my youth, not even its theme song

    idk

filmation has a (more deservedly than H-B) poor reputation

i mean Lou Scheimer sounds like a mensch but still

anyway most of the shows you mentioned have either been completely forgotten or are a source of fond memories for most

I am one of the five people who sticks up for Dave Feiss's shows, so
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
point being i wouldn't have said Sabrina:TAS struck me as particularly worse than a lot of the shows i mentioned

of the shows i mentioned Buzz was the least interesting to me since it just seemed kind of boring

I Am Weasel was downright offputting and kind of unpleasant to watch, but had a silly sense of humour that i appreciated

by comparison Sabrina was a show where nothing very exciting happened but the character designs were vaguely appealing and there was nothing really offputting about it besides a sense of 'but this isn't the real Sabrina'
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
nobody but me seems to actually find Dave Feiss's shows visually appealing

though I admit I dislike how both of his shows seemed to run out of steam later on (Weasel went from charismatic ace to fucking jackass, also Cow and Chicken got less amusing)
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
also the look of both of them got more "polished" later and I tend to dislike that
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
anyway Buzz Lightyear of Star Command was boring as hell and the only good thing about it is that it is an in-universe half-hour toy commercial
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
better we got that than an actual CGI Toy Story: The Series

not even Eisner-era Disney would have been dumb enough to go for that
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
also Steve Jobs probably would have gotten angry about it
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
You should read Sabrina The Teenage Witch instead. Comics. They're good for you.

well like they have these gigantic flaring nostrils and grotesque wobbling buttocks, their proportions are a mess, they're angular and unnatural looking and their faces are bizarre geometric shapes and their teeth are like piano keys

if you'd asked me for the literal definition of visually unappealing i don't think i could have come up with anything less appealing to look at than Dave Feiss' cartoons if i'd tried, short of maybe posting a picture of a botfly larva in somebody's eyeball or something like that

like i dunno, i know that sounds incredibly harsh but i thought that was the point, i thought 'horrible ugly cartoons' was the look Feiss was going for
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
Dave Feiss has a very idiosyncratic style, but its idiosyncrasy appeals to me

It always looked organic and rough to me

    better that than clumsily geometric
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
anyway anyone who likes Feiss's style should watch "No Smoking"
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
even if you don't it's interesting

it's more fluidly animated and less rough than the show it got made into

also one can't help but get a bit sad when the Hanna-Barbera logo emerges from the swirly-thing at the start

    ted why did you sell

    WHY
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
    end "RIP Hanna-Barbera" moaning
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
i've seen No Smoking, it's fun

i do actually kind of like Cow and Chicken, i just also find it kind of gross and unpleasant

that sounds like a contradiction, it's hard to explain

it's funny but it's purposefully grating
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
'organic' is a funny word to me and i guess it's possible i don't actually know what it means

i wouldn't have said Cow and Chicken was organic because like, actual cows and chickens don't look anything like that

if it's about animation then more smooth = more organic to me, which would make Star vs the Forces of Evil organic, but i don't think that's what you mean
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
organic, I suppose, means less hewed to geometry, more spontaneous in its appearance
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
so... Adventure Time: organic or not?
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
    there's no hard-and-fast divide

I don't know if I could necessary classify it as one or the other, based on what I've seen of it
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
    fair enough

it's what i think of when i hear 'spontaneous' but i'm starting to think i don't actually know what words mean
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
kinda like that thing Lee said the other day, about when you see stuff written and you think you know what it means
  • We can do anything if we do it together.

I still need to read Tania Del Rio's Sabrina comics sometime.
  • I wasn't allowed to watch live-action Sabrina, but I could watch the cartoon, so I I liked it a fair bit.
