If Centie and I ever adopt a nameless child or if our Centralia selves have any (if I stay female there's gonna be an argument over which one of us will get pregnant) here's our list of baby names to start off...they are all references to something or other:

Male: Dawson, Thaddeus, Orion, Roger

Female: Diane, Mabel, Belle, Elsa, Anita, Perdita

Unisex: Avery

I'd name them according to their genitals and re-name them accordingly if their sex made them unhappy and they wanted a new one. A gendered name and assuming they are fine with their sex is normal and fine. This is different from treating them differently because of their sex, which is an unfortunate tendency of many parents.

We're going with family names if we have kids, with the caveat that there will be no IV involved which is fair enough because even discounting his side, my dad's brother, father, and grandfather are all Williams too.

i used to have a mental list of kids' names i liked, but i no longer feel strongly about it and consequently i forgot what was on it

Magic Jane, i think Sakura is an interesting choice; i've always liked it, and it's the one Japanese name i could picture myself using

There are a few unisex names i like: Ashley, Brook, Alex, Meredith (although i think that might be too feminine for a boy these days?), Robin (which is considered masculine in this country)... it's hard, though, if you restrict your choices to those, as there aren't that many to pick from.

I really like a lot of unisex names. Alex, Taylor, Jordan, Erin, Avery, Sydney, et cetera.

I think they appeal to me just because I like names with fewer associations attached to them. It's a bit more of a blank slate for the child to do what they want with themselves.

I do not plan on ever having children, though, because 1) I don't think I'd enjoy caring for one 24/7 for a variety of reasons and 2) the idea of pregnancy terrifies me (though I know I could adopt, but reason 1 is still applicable).

One of the problems is that most of those "unisex" names were originally male names that got deemed insufficiently macho.

And there's quite often a common female spelling of them that's different from the original male-name spelling (e.g. Sydney vs. Sidney)

So I feel that there's at least an element of that that's kinda really enforcing the same gender binary, it's just that the bounds of 'acceptably male' are shrinking.

By proxy I'm saddled with the responsibility of naming my firstborn son Manuel Roy L[bleep] IV because LEGACY, but in all honesty I'll probably end up calling him something else in a similar fashion to how my own name is Tre (I'd figure either Roy or some variant of the number 4).

Other than that, though, I like:

TBH i've always had kind of an aversion to the idea of naming children after fictional characters. This is a bit Katie Hopkins of me, i know, because a lot of people do that, it's just always struck me as, hm, maybe sort of tacky? Like saying, 'i value this child's name, which they'll probably be saddled with for life, only as much as i value this anime'. i understand it's not meant that way and i'm not sitting here judging people who do it, i just never felt totally comfortable with the idea myself.

I value my favorite works of fiction a LOT, and at least two of the names in my list were inspired by real people involved in them (Dawson is for Daws Butler, and Avery is for Tex Avery)...

currently off topic but throwing back to unisex names: as someone with one, my very first encounter with someone else with my name was a boy in my pre-school class named Shannon and we both had micro-identity crises about the other one having our name, much WHY DOES A GIRL HAVE MY NAME/WHY DOES A BOY HAVE MY NAME to be had. That said, there is definitely some merit to unisex names, particularly in the biased society we currently live in. Current actual baby name choices the butt and I have can all have neutral shortened nickname forms, which can come in handy.

all things considered, "Celestia" isn't all that far off from "Celeste", which actually is a legit person name

similarly, I wouldn't go so far to name my kid "Rayman" but I could go with something similar, like "Raymond" or just plain "Ray"
