The collar is important. It allows for the head to have its own animation independent of the body.

There are episodes of The Flintstones where Fred and/or Barney are shown without their design traits allowing for their heads to look separate from the rest of their bodies

Yeah, but the collar makes it look more natural than...whatever Barney's got on.

Fred and Barney also have the advantage of having proper clothing most of the time, which reduces the need for the collar trick.

I find all the variations on it interesting

Huck's tends to vary but he defaults to wearing a bowtie, Jinks has a bowtie too (as do Pixie and Boo Boo; Dixie doesn't have one), Quick Draw and Baba Looey have their bandanas, Loopy De Loop has a scarf, the pink Snagglepuss has his upturned collar (the original orange one didn't have anything like that)

So when I was a kid I never thought of Barney as stupid.

I always thought of him as Fred Flintstone's friend, who had his life slightly more together than Fred did.

I don't think of Barney as stupid, I kind of feel bad for him

He's so spineless and he keeps getting sucked into Fred's harebrained schemes without questioning them and I wonder how he got that way
