Is it possible for something that is primarily comedic in tone to have such a thing?

I kind of worry that the term I'm using here would bring to mind cheesy old sitcoms that have to remind us that the characters really do love each other or something, but that's not what I mean.

Sure. Calvin and Hobbes is an obvious example, but even dark comedy, like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia or Louie often manages to squeeze some in around the edges.

Of course. Comedy is not inherently emotionally shallow or vapid.
