As much as I am convinced that Gamergate and most of it's collaborators are scum, we should be able to talk about it in a constructive manner.
This kind of post doesn't really open the table for conversation, and I'd rather we have that rather than passive-aggressively insult people who would rather debate about it.
I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
BTL was initially about trying to improve TV Tropes or something
There were a fair amount of people back who thought TV Tropes was too spergy and needed to be more serious and analytical, if it was to be a legitimate resource
I like sperging about my favorite things, but now I realize that Tumblr is thataway for that
This is a notice of compliance with Centralian Code § 230.9.8.17, "Information Redaction As Relating to Computing and Telephony Technology", paragraph 4. In short, the Centralian Records and Security Information Administration (CRAISA) is required to declassify and publicly release certain information classified SECRET or above "relating to making fun of total weirdos" in certain situations; point 3 shows "when it would be funny" as such a situation. A review by the Internal Humor Corps intelligence agency concluded that making this thread public would be "pretty funny, I guess"; as such, the information contained in this thread is hereby reclassified OPEN SECRET.
BTL initially started out as a response to a big argument in TvTropes. Don't remember the specifics, but one of the more reasonable tropers--Cyanogen, or something similar--got banned and everybody was talking about how creepy the Pokegirls and Kodomo no Jikan pages were. BTL was intended to be a place where we could discuss the mods' actions and the issues surrounding those pages without the fear of getting bannned. However,

in practice BTL was usually just a lot of vitriol directed at random-ass people
Cygan Angel, alias Nova Noir, but she wasn't the only person whose banning spurred things on. It was... it's a long story.
Basically, you're right in spirit even if the trivial details aren't completely accurate. It was a mostly well-intentioned-ish clusterfuck that turned into a very ill-intentioned one over time.
i don't like tvt or btl, if we're volunteering opinions
i would like it if we stopped periodically declaring topics off-limits, coupled with the disdain people here have for most things i like, it's making me anxious about making any post whatsoever besides shitposts and small-talk

It's not that I say this kind of thing is off-topic, but the decision going forward from a post of "FUCK EVERYTHING TO DO WITH THIS" Isn't going to be one where emotions aren't running high.
^^ I don't feel disdain for the things that you like, if I'm getting what you're alluding to right. And I don't think that the topic is intrinsically off-limits. It's just that we're not actually talking about TVT in the first place.
i understood what you meant, Clock... i wasn't really responding to you, more voicing something i've been feeling about stuff in general here lately, which naney's remarks brought to mind
i mean there was the discussion i was having with Glenn, the CWC thing, gamergate... either we have a growing list of things that can't be talked about, or the way i talk about things is unwelcome, or both
maybe the disdain thing was inaccurate, or my perception is off...
It's not that those particular subjects are intrinsically frowned upon or off-limits, or even that you talk about them in a bad way per se, but that it seems like some of those subjects trigger some really ugly emotions in people here that drive them to argue nigh-interminably about semantics and crochets when, more often than not, their basic stances on the issue aren't actually that different at all, which is deeply vexing.
TVT is kind of the ur example of a taboo subject here, though, it's true
I'm OK with talking about it, some people aren't. It's not really verboten anymore, but a lot of people just don't deem it relevant or interesting or fun from a discussion perspective.
well, it's fair not to be personally interested in talking about it, i just don't like when discussions prompt a series of yesquoted 'not this again's or 'why would you still be talking about this'es, or worse, outright demands that nobody talk about whatever it is
this is itself fast becoming one of those nigh-interminable arguments, i realize, but it's not like people will stop trying to ban subjects if i stop saying this
y'know i'm starting to think Glenn was right all along and there are actually a ton of things that can't be discussed on hh
The TvTropes rule is still on the books so that, if it ever gets out of hand like it used to, the modhammer can be used without having to provide an explanation.
Basically, but not quite. There will still be explanation, but it will be less "YOU SAID THE WORD OF THE DAY AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA" than "OK, this is going to a bad place, please stop."
Looking back, I think the issue wasn't so much that there were creepy works on TVT; it's that they were being discussed in a way that could be put simply as "overly positive". There were quite a few creeps on the site back then, and it seems like the mods were more interested in banning os shushing the people complaining about them for protesting too much rather then doing something about, say, the people that made drooling, sexually-lurid comments about attractive actresses.
Considering what Morven said, I get the feeling this was as much Eddie sitting in a corner panicking about how his beautiful site was being ruined by SJWs and threatening to RMDIR/S/Q C:\INETPUB\WWWROOT\*.* if it didn't stop, as much as it was people "complaining about nothing" (which they weren't).

How did this thread become about TVT?
"Let's get Vivian James committed" is something I used to joke about on Twitter, joke being, of course, that Vivian James isn't real.
As for BTL: it still amuses me that they went ahead with their "let's troll IJBM" thread despite knowing that I, an IJBM moderator, can read their private board. Dumbasses.

For balance's sake.
