As much as I am convinced that Gamergate and most of it's collaborators are scum, we should be able to talk about it in a constructive manner.

This kind of post doesn't really open the table for conversation, and I'd rather we have that rather than passive-aggressively insult people who would rather debate about it.

BTL initially started out as a response to a big argument in TvTropes. Don't remember the specifics, but one of the more reasonable tropers--Cyanogen, or something similar--got banned and everybody was talking about how creepy the Pokegirls and Kodomo no Jikan pages were. BTL was intended to be a place where we could discuss the mods' actions and the issues surrounding those pages without the fear of getting bannned. However,

Cygan Angel, alias Nova Noir, but she wasn't the only person whose banning spurred things on. It was... it's a long story.

Basically, you're right in spirit even if the trivial details aren't completely accurate. It was a mostly well-intentioned-ish clusterfuck that turned into a very ill-intentioned one over time.

It's not that those particular subjects are intrinsically frowned upon or off-limits, or even that you talk about them in a bad way per se, but that it seems like some of those subjects trigger some really ugly emotions in people here that drive them to argue nigh-interminably about semantics and crochets when, more often than not, their basic stances on the issue aren't actually that different at all, which is deeply vexing.

Looking back, I think the issue wasn't so much that there were creepy works on TVT; it's that they were being discussed in a way that could be put simply as "overly positive". There were quite a few creeps on the site back then, and it seems like the mods were more interested in banning os shushing the people complaining about them for protesting too much rather then doing something about, say, the people that made drooling, sexually-lurid comments about attractive actresses.

For a long period, there was no consensus that we could ban anyone for an opinion, position or advocacy. Only behavior was bannable.

I think TVT is an object lesson that you need to think about these kind of things up front.
