there are some characters i don't recognize
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
    which are?

The squirrel, the woman in the red dress, and the animal creature between Dee Dee and Velma.

Also the guy with the blue jeans and the black top, but that's probably just because his head's cut off.

i mean the one on the sleeve, obviously, not Johnny Bravo

The squirrel is Screwy Squirrel, a Tex Avery character who was present in just five shorts before he was killed off, due to Tex Avery's disdain for ongoing characters. (He created Droopy, who lasted much longer than he only because MGM was consciously creating a recurrent cartoon star)

The woman in the red dress is fellow Tex creation Red, as in "Red Hot Riding Hood". The animal creature is Moxy, a character from early in CN's life voiced by Bobcat Goldthwait. The guy with the blue jeans and the black top is Jonny Quest.

Screwy Squirrel... was he the inspiration for Slappy Squirrel?

And i do know who Jonny Quest is... evidently not well enough to recognize him based just on his outfit, though.

Yeah, he was. And she was created before WB had the rights to the character too (Turner Entertainment owned most of MGM's pre-1986 intellectual property, including their cartoon characters, and Turner Entertainment was turned over to WB after the Time Warner-Turner merger got done)

An old CN promo pointed out that their two Jo(h)nnies (Quest and Bravo) had similar outfits - and blonde hair:

And no, the licensing art for the Hanna-Barbera characters hasn't changed in like 16 years. It still looks good, but still!

seeing some of those guys juxtaposed is weird

though i guess wouldn't be if i watched CN
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
    it is?
  • imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
yah, but i think it's from not watching CN rather than anything to do with designs or whatever... i had them sorted into separate mental brackets or whatever

    or whatever or whatever

Also, Rocket J. Squirrel and the Thing are in it - and Time Warner owned neither of those characters (Rocky was at the time the sole property of Jay Ward's estate, while the Thing is of course a Marvel character - lucky for them, Disney had not yet overpaid but gotten it)

And who owns the Addams Family characters anyway? I assume Charles Addams's estate does...

Did a USPTO search - turns out the Tee & Charles Addams Foundation does!

    Marvel and DC

    so alike yet forever apart

was Augie Doggie ever one of 'the biggest cartoon stars' and if so, how did this come about?

is it just reflected glory from Quickdraw McGraw or was he popular in his own right?

I don't think he was ever big, not like Yogi got (I think Yogi Bear's show was the first time a TV show spun off from another one)

His segment originated on Quick Draw's show, so it might have been reflected glory

Yogi definitely holds more appeal to me

Augie and his Daddy have nice designs, but it feels kind of like Michael Maltese's heart wasn't in them like it was Quick Draw or Snooper and Blabber (or, indeed, Snagglepuss, who originated on Quick Draw's show too - he was an orange villain at first, then when Yogi got his own show, he became the star of a segment there and turned into a pink hero)

Screwy is notable for being one of the few cartoon characters of his type that makes Bugs Bunny look positively level-headed.

The Mysterious Ballerina and her Tree Stump Ghosts
I can remember all those characters, but its been so long since I saw them that I honestly struggle to compare the quality of them

Well, I know which ones I liked more than the others, but I don't wanna get into what Kid Patch liked...

    ...I still like the shirt
