    It's the duck face. It's kind of like :U which is basically shorthand for "I am a dunce, I admit it."

    Note: It can also serve as the Pacman emote, which may or may not be useful, and to more generally indicate yammering, duckface (as in the expression), false shock, or irony.

    It's quite versatile! Also apparently pretty old as emoticons go, if not as common as, say, :-) and whatnot.
