  • Sup bitches, witches, Haters, and trolls.
    i've never played it
  • I actually used to own it

I played it for like ten minutes and then went back to whichever Pokemon the first one was contemporary with.
  • Does Something Awful hate Golden Sun

how could anyone hate Golden Sun, it's just a decent-good classic-style JRPG
  • I know that it exists

    maybe they hate JRPGs
  • is that one of those things they say is for that word they use when they mean "autistic people" but don't want people to know that they hate autistic people.

    "grognards" I think it is
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
"grognard" sounds like something Strong Bad would say
  • grognard is their word for people who have opinions on tabletop RPGs that they don't like
  • ...how is it even remotely associated with autistic people?

I mean you could say that about a lot of things but I think the unifying characteristic between all games associated with autism is an abundance of stuff and Golden Sun isn't as rife with stuff as, say, Minecraft or Sonic are.
(I know, I know, easy targets, but they're the most commonly cited ones)
  • well maybe it is

who the fuck knows, who the fuck cares
  • I actually wasn't referring to what you said, more a general idea that certain things are arbitrarily associated with autism. Which is true.
  • there are certain things that have a weird autism magnet factor yeah
  • Sup bitches, witches, Haters, and trolls.

nah, grognards is a particular sort of movement in tabletop gaming that prefer D&D 3.x or something

when goons want to hate autistic people they just say "sperg"

Eh, dunno if it's my place to say that, I was talking about association by stereotypes.
  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
Did somebody say Thomas the Tank Engine
  • Did somebody say Thomas the Tank Engine

i was actually gonna mention that specifically
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
(obligatory mention of my desire to own Thomas)
  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
    Nobody can truly own Thomas

He belongs to the autistic children of the world
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
Do any of those autistic children own stock in Mattel?
  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
    That's not important
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
it's not my fault you don't understand the shark mindset :P
  • My dreams exceed my real life
As far as I can tell goons hate Golden Sun

    * because it is wordy
    * Jrpg
  • That was an utterly nauseatingly pretentious handful of paragraphs and I regret knowing that they existed.
  • to be fair this dialogue does seem to be incredibly terrible so far

Not terribly, necessarily, but Golden Sun was not a game with a very involved story and its dialogue was very straightforward and unremarkable.

Also I have one of two opinions on this depending on the intent with which was written

    • If it were written to showcase the importance of different writing styles for different genres, it's funny and conveyed that well
    • If it were written as a jab at sci-fi, it's just needless condescension that doesn't understand that genres built on establishing worlds need to, y'know, establish worlds.
  • ...And even when your hope is gone
move along, move along, just to make it through
    (2015 self)
'Nonny, you can never own Thomas the Tank engine. He belongs to the children of the world, neurotypical and neuroatypical.

Same way you can never own Winnie the Pooh, Madeline, Waldo/Wally, and many other things.

And no transfer of funds can change that.
  • worldbuilding is important

but it needs to be way, way more organic than that
  • I've learned to tolerate drama...except on the boat
I bought Waldo with Classic Media, silly

    What Tucker said.

Except that I enjoyed at face value what was meant to be a not-sincere-thing.

Then again, I am not known for my discernment with regards to literary quality or taste.

    Anyways,

'Nonus, you can't even end a sentence properly, no way you can-KABANNED!

Well, yes, clearly things need to be more organic than a parody of non-organic writing
like I said, it depends on the intent. If it's intending to disparage scifi that's... kind of an issue. Although maybe I'm just going Not All Men with genres, who knows.
  • it's not critiquing sci-fi as a whole it's specifically gunning after those d-grade Quantum Flux doorstopper paperback "part of the Magikal Alternaquest Cycle" books that read exactly like that
  • Okay, so I was going Not All Men with genres.
  • “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
    Kinda, yeah.

I like in-depth organic worldbuilding, and I don't mind expository rants when they are well-written and intrinsically entertaining. Iain Banks was really good at conveying a lot of new information without making you feel like you were being lectured to.
  • reading this LP everything seems pretty on-point so far imo
  • Golden Sun, together with its sequel, is a great story with an interesting setting.

Also, you can't be a true goon because you don't have yellow skin, wings, and ruby-colored shorts.
  • As someone whose played the game, he's just being kind of a condescending fuck. Exhaustingly so, really.

    “I'm surprised. Those clothes… but, aren't you…?”
Being condescending doesn't make someone wrong. It just suggests other non-positive things about them.
  • Game criticism- especially in this form- makes it really easy to get hung up on minor flaws and completely ignore any sort of merit, which seems very much to be what's happening here. Disagreement is fine but this person really isn't digging deep into any design issues; he's just sneering and using a barrage of unoriginal complaints. His tone is completely unhelpful and even his section about "fixing" the game would necessitate essentially a complete overhaul of the game's narrative to be more in line with his vision of what it should play out like.
  • Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
    This is a shitpost thread.

    What are you doing.
  • I'm mostly just shocked that anyone thinks about Golden Sun enough to hate it.

    It's like hating

    I don't know

    98 Degrees or something
  • My dreams exceed my real life
Goons have a geas to watch, play, and read things they hate.
  • but how can you even hate Golden Sun

    it's so profoundly unremarkable
  • Sup bitches, witches, Haters, and trolls.
trying to LP it, probably, since a series that wordy would be a pain

Yeah but both LPs started with the express intention to demolish nostalgia.
