  it's pretty squarish, but more wide than it is tall. it's also bigger in those directions than it is in the third one, and if you put yourself perpendicular to that third axis you can't really see anything on the screen because of the way the screen is oriented.

  i have widescreen monitors, usually 1366x768, one external at 1600x900.
  
  a friend gave me this older one whose resolution i'm not sure of but i think it is a 5:4 ratio.
  
  the school has a lot of computers with square screens.
  
  i'd like to get a long monitor.  i.e. longer than wide.

  I have a 20-inch (?) 1080p Westinghouse television that acts as a monitor because I personally no longer see the point in them being separate devices.
  
  And also because I don't get cable/DirecTV like all of the other currently operating TVs in the house do.

  My resolution is so high because I have one of those new Macs with a retina display. I'm not exactly sure what that means, but Sredni may know.

  The resolution on your screen is intended to be high enough that it makes discernible pixels a thing of the past.
  
  YMMV on whether or not Apple succeeded, but their screens have been decent for it on mobile for a while now.

  Maybe it's just me?  But I actually DO want discernable pixels.  I frequently make use of that when image-editing.

  ^^ FWIW, I find that my current laptop screen is a fair bit nicer to look at than my old one, so I think that they succeeded in that regard.

  According to the computer itself, the resolution on this machine is 1280 x 1024 @ 60 Hz. Not sure how big it is precisely.
