Man is a most complex simple creature: see what he weaves, and how base his reasons for doing so.
Mary-Sues are about narrative weight. About extremes, about importance. They're about being interested in solely one thing.
A character with whom the story is in love with, whom we are told is amazing and perfect and sexy and can do no wrong is assuredly a Mary-Sue. But at the same time, a character with whom the story absolutely hates, whom we are told is hated and abused and ugly and cannot do anything right and is just suffering so much is also a Mary-Sue.
Sure, both are different forms of an ideal. Both are different forms of wish-fulfillment, where one justifies the "uniqueness", the other justifies the universe out to get them.
