Saw the 3DS version in the wild for the first time today. A freshman in my drama class had it; he was playing as green Mega Man (who is obvsly best Mega Man, as you are all fully aware).
I didn't catch much beyond that, but one thing was certain: Pikachu was getting his ass kicked
The following are some relatively pointless Smash 3DS impressions in case somebody wanted to read them for some reason.
So far I have been having trouble using most of the new characters, so I am mostly sticking to Olimar, Ness, and other returning fighters. I am probably just bad at the game, but I still have not really got the hang of how Rosalina & Luma play (except in Multi-Man Smash maybe). Shulk is surprisingly fun though (I am really feeling it with him) and Lucina seems to be a bit more beginner-friendly than Marth, something I appreciate as a nublet.
Speaking of Olimar, Olimar does seem to be generally nerfed this time around. The Winged Pikmin recovery is a bit easier to use than his Pikmin chain from Brawl, but his attacking options are somewhat more limited now without the Pikmin chain. I think the new 3 Pikmin limit also makes free-for-alls a bit tougher for Olimar than they were in Brawl due to the need to conserve your min. That said, Olimar was pretty good in Brawl, so nerfing might have been worth it to make things more balanced.
I think Ness has been improved a little overall and his final smash can now be aimed (as can Olimar's to some extent), so it is a lot more effective than it once was. Notwithstanding those changes, Ness seems to generally play a lot like his Brawl incarnation, which is actually not true for a number of returning fighters that have been reworked somewhat.
It looks like some reviewers think Smash Run is kind of underwhelming. I can kind of see what they mean, especially given the lack of an online option or any apparent way to change the length of a Smash Run game or what the final battle is. That said, I guess I feel like Smash Run, like a lot of the modes in Smash 3DS, is geared towards quick pick-up-and-play gameplay and serves that function decently well, particularly if you use a fast character who can actually, well, "run."
Playing Smash 3DS just makes me that much more hyped for Smash Wii U.
Okay probably don't it's half an hour long, but here are the highlights: eight player smash, Great Cave Offensive, background/foreground stage switching, Smash version of Mario Party, MEWTWO (as DLC, in spring), Kid Icarus Uprising characters are the new codec conversations...it's so beautiful.
I just lost against 9.0 master core's final form after effortlessly beating the others when he dodged my pk lightning and it hit me, launching myself off the stage.
So I thought 8-player smash was gonna just be a gimmick, but it's actually one of the best parts of the game. It really brings out the hectic, chaotic aspect of Smash that I love so much.
Aside from that, the game is just gorgeous, and all the new stages are awesome (especially Orbital Gate Assault). I think Smash 4 has the best balance--I'm sure a competitive tier list will form, but there's no character I'd point at and say "don't play them, they're awful" like I would with, say, Sonic last time. You can just pick whoever looks cool or suits your style of play or whatever.
I've been having a lot of fun with the game for the most part, but I can't get over how about half the new characters are utter crap. Characters like Rosalina, Villager, and Wii Fit Trainer don't seem to actually have any sort of "trick" -- they're just consummately bad at everything. A lot of the other newer ones seem to be good at damage, but don't really have much in the way of kill shots.
That, and some of the event matches are a bit too unreasonable. Me and a friend tried the final tag-team event (one life against all characters), and the damage ratios were cranked so high that we had to put well over 200% damage on one of them before I could kill him as Fox.
Rosalina? Huh. She appears to be doing fine on the official tier list.
In other news, someone found the "post-fight natter" musical bit from SFII in the files for SSB4, under Ryu's name.
On the one hand, I'm down with adding Street Fighter into the mix. On the other hand, Ryu? Knowing his usual special moves, you know he's going to resemble a mario clone.
on the one hand i think it's really awesome that Ryu is in the game
otoh i know this is negative but well, i'd have rather he wasn't dlc you had to pay for
there were already hardly any unlockable characters, the starting roster for this title was insane to the point of being daunting, which kinda takes the fun out of unlocking stuff imo
it would have been kinda cool if they'd just released ryu et al in an update and had people discover them by unlocking them
The old Nintendo wouldn't have had any way to get new content out there
Ryu really came as a surprise, I'm not gonna get him but if they put up someone I'm more interested in I'll jump on it. Probably gonna pick up the Smash 64 stages when they come out, though--the two they said are coming up were two of my favorites.
Spinning Dragon Kick (no force on earth will force me to learn the name of Ryu's spinkick) is Side-B, since he doesn't seem to be able to do the stationary verson.
And Focus Attack'll be Down B. As all of you know, being rabid SF fans, Focus Attack is an attack with super-armor that allows you to shrug off one hit. Meaning that it's probably going to be a counter here.
The Direct goes into more detail but basically you can hit B for his hadouken or you can do the traditional down-to-forward A and it'll come out stronger, ditto for all his moves.

Uh, Rosalina and Villager are actually my favorite new characters... I guess I just end up liking a lot of the weird ones; Olimar is my most used fighter in Smash after all. From the little I know, Yarrun is right about Rosalina being high in tier lists (Olimar is too, I think), but I sort of know what you mean. I had absolutely no clue what to do with Olimar when I first used him in Brawl, mostly because his moves were so different from anything I had seen before. I think it tends to take practice to be able to be effective with characters like him, Rosalina, and Villager (and WFT too, probably though I admittedly do not use her/him much).
I agree about that "you with one stock against literally everybody" co-op event match, though. Patch and I had a hard time with that one and the one that has you stopping Game & Watches from landing on the Star Fox stage.

I think it would be pretty cool to have a free unlockable Ryu hidden in the game, but I guess if that happened Nintendo/Capcom could not hype him up as much. While the Ryu + Suzaku Castle pack may be a bit on the pricy side, I think the people who put the time and effort into the DLC deserve some compensation for it, you know? That said, it would be a different story in my eyes if this DLC was pretty clearly made before the game's release and just put out there now to make some extra money. As it is, I feel like it is okay, but I do not disagree that in the aggregate all of the Smash DLC released thus far is a bit expensive.
As for Rosalina i can't seem to get the hang of how to play as her.
But then i haven't tried very often.
Derailing slightly, i have kind of mixed feelings about her, since by Mario standards she's a good character but i feel they could have made her look less like an alternate costume variant of Peach.
They actually put a ridiculous amount of effort into adapting the SF style to Smash Bros. He has light/medium/hard attacks based on how long you press the attack button. He's actually built to peform combos. He has two Final Smashes, akin to the two Ultra Combos in SF4. He even has that one annoying overhead punch, which now does extra damage to shields because of course it does.
I am forced to rescind my earlier comment. This is actually pretty unique. I wouldn't be surprised if Smash releases an Omega Mode where every character handles like this.
Also, situational Final Smashes are the best idea.
I don't outright dislike him, but shotoclones have been dominating Street Fighter 4 and none of my mains do well against projectiles or shoryukens, which all shotoclones have.
At least it's not Ken. Screw Ken and his stupid, stupid eyebrows.
Chun-Li's fairly well-written for the Street Fighter universe, unlike some of the other girls (*cough* Elena *cough*), has a decent costume that isn't as fetishistic as it could be (*cough* Cammy *cough*), requires strategy that's more complicated than *spam this one move and then spam this other move*, and isn't played by everybody and their mum (*cough* Juri *cough*)

I've been trying to get better with Robin but I'm more used to using faster characters like Sonic and Greninja

However if it was less expensive i probably would not complain.
