Much like the original series had things that were basically cell phones, TNG's PADDs were basically tablets.

Even now you can use voice commands to call anyone in your address book if you have the right software, so we are essentially already there. We just don't have spacecraft that can travel at relative faster-than-light speeds, although given the fact that their supposed impossibility hinges on a pretty strict definition of causality and we still have plenty of time to see if the rules always hold the way that we think that they do...

Yarrun, we can move the funding to R&D anyway. The US spends a stupifying quantity of monies on unnecessary military miscellanea. Even if we were to use our military to its fullest capacity, we would still be wasting an insane amount of money. We could ditch 90% of it and still have a strong civil defence.

And who says that universal mind-reading would mean world peace? Again, have you ever seen "The Land of Visible Pain"? We'd all end up suicidal hermits, served by AI that does not really understand our needs but is our only option for company- world peace through the absolute isolation of all human beings! Even if you made everyone think alike, what would anyone even bother to do any more?

It's really an astoundingly atrocious idea.
