I'm still surprised that a term (specifically the term "gacha") only arose to describe this recently, considering that this style of randomization has been present for decades.
It's not a mechanic that's been around for decades though.
Loot crates in TF2 were one of the first instances of paid randomised loot in video games, and were introduced in September 2010. Puzzle and Dragons, which popularised gacha mechanics in mobile games, and the term gacha in reference to them, was released in February 2012.
Fwiw as far as "gacha" specifically, Maplestory had its gachapon (as in specifically called that + the randomized stuff mechanic) cash shop stuff since at least 2009.
Though of course that's still not even one decade let alone multiple.
You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022

I was referring to TCG booster packs. Not a vg microtransaction thing, but still.
If someone comes into your house, and you say "this is the dog", they generally would assume it's only your dog. If you say "this is the local dog", then they know that that means other members of the broader community have access to it (someone might say this jokingly to imply the dog just happens to be there rather than actually belonging to them).

I seem to recall that after that, each of the mods took turns picking a title before we finally went back to the usual one
