    There was a storyline about Trump having a yacht accident and having his brain inserted in the body of Bill the Cat.

    Bill the Cat was the strip's parody of Garfield, a character who was completely unappealing and unmarketable by design.

    It may also be an overcorrection to the sorts of things that happened in the 1970s and 1980s, where anime was more likely to be loosely adapted or edited together with two or three other shows in order to make something entirely different. It wasn't until people started demanding "no cuts" that we even started seeing faithful dubs, much less anime in the original Japanese.

    that's what i think is going on largely

    a lot of people cite the horrible dubs of the 90s where names were changed and stuff got cut/edited

    honestly though i'm not sure how much i object to cutting/editing per se

    Also, I just watched MarzGurl's review of The Little Prince, and surprise! Like a lot of 1980s English dubs, it's a Macekre. :P The company that made the English adaptation, Jambre, might be related to WEP somehow (they seem to share a lot of staff) but I can't prove it

    It seems like Sailor Moon couldn't catch a break on this for years (it's certainly the anime I saw the most complaints about), and I don't remember if it was DiC or Toei being difficult about it.

    tbf that wasn't *solely* the fault of the dubbing company, several episodes were dubbed but not aired due to a perception that boys wouldn't like them

    in terms of severity of changes, what about Macross?

    Not entirely.

    Like, ok, there isn't really a right/wrong way to appreciate a TV show, but having a preference for watching things in the language they were originally scripted and dubbed in isn't arbitrary.
