Or maybe even not watching much TV / not playing that many games in general. Which basically meant that my appreciation of them came from thinking (and feeling) deeper and deeper about the same works, gaining a more personal relationship with them through how they related to my own life. As opposed to watching a lot of TV / playing a lot of games which might have led to a more diffuse interest and shallower relationship in each as well as a greater frequency of comparing things to each other.
To some people, Nanoha is "just" a character. She may even be a main character, or a notable character. But she has little significance beyond the stories she appears in.
To some people, Nanoha is an object of fantasy and desires. She is seen as a source of fanservice in one way or another -- as a female with an appealing body, and/or a lesbian lover, and/or a source of social touchpoints (such as memes).
To me, she is neither of the above. To me, she is an inspiration -- she is hard-working and demanding while also being caring and patient, passionate yet careful; she is a brilliant strategist as well as a master of diplomacy and negotiation. She fights hard for what she cares about, but she also talks firmly but sympathetically and makes genuine efforts to come to understandings with those on the other side of a conflict, and often wins hearts by skillfully making use of both carrot and stick simultaneously. She is a role-model.
Personally i'm glad they are in the landfill. Not because they are inherently awful, but because i don't agree with them, and i feel that since this is the landfill i am less obligated to defend my opinions wrt Madoka.

Yeah, @Tachyon gets it, and actually explains something I've felt but never coherently voiced myself -- that this thread feels more like basically a graffiti wall with no obligation to reply, where it's completely okay and acceptable to ignore whatever is going on, as opposed to a normal conversation thread where it may feel disrespectful to do the same.
That said, @Tachyon, feel free to reply if you want.
Also, I want to say that the only good things in Dragonaut are the incredibly good music and the voice acting (at least in the American English dub). But the problem is I've never really gotten a feel of exactly how bad the story is. I can point to specific examples of it being bad, but I haven't figured out an overall assessment of the story.
Seriously I should start specifying "American English dub" more often. Not that there exists any other dub for this series, but other dubs exist for other series, and also not everyone speaks American English.
OK, well, i think that it is *not* a failing of Madoka Magica that you have to think about it a lot, and that the emotional moments are somewhat spread out. For me that heightened their impact. NGE and Madoka are different series and even if i preferred NGE i wouldn't want Madoka to be NGE.
i also feel that 'a sense of wonder', while a good thing, is plainly not what Madoka was going for and would not enhance it
i haven't played The Spirits Within but the suggestion that *any* Final Fantasy game has a better story than Madoka provokes incredulity and mild annoyance in me
i also feel that 'a sense of wonder', while a good thing, is plainly not what Madoka was going for and would not enhance it
By "sense of wonder" I also mean that feeling of being in the presence of something greater or being overwhelmed with awe. I haven't figured out what makes that happen, but I certainly felt that way in response to FFTSW, which is why I really enjoy it, while I felt that Madoka Magica lacked that.
Unless you mean that Madoka Magica was meant to feel emotionally "dry", in which case I guess then we could just disagree on what constitutes good storytelling.
Also that trailer, like many other trailers, doesn't do its subject justice.

i feel there is a false dichotomy here.
Awe is not the only emotion. Madoka was not emotionally dry, i can't think of any work of fiction which was as strongly emotional for me as Madoka ultimately turned out to be.
Of course ultimately what that means is it made me feel a particular way and it didn't make you feel that way.
But it was a very strong feeling, for me. It possibly had to do with other things i'd been feeling at the time, but at the time it was like, actually feeling for the first time after weeks of feeling very little. i was crying and elated at the same time.
Well to be fair, there's a difference between favorite and empathizing. It could be the difference between liking an "other" and feeling a sense of "self", for example.
More people have said that and been killed than there are thorium decay products.

Here's a summary: everyone's favorite characters from ff7 get back together to investigate and fight against some evil Jenova clones that turn out to be a reincarnation of Sephiroth. Predictably, the clone(s) become Sephiroth and Cloud defeats him with superior sword skills.
It's a dumb plot. It not only ruins the ambiguity of the original ff7's ending, but it also commits to "canon" a bunch of incredibly dumb things that the original writers would have never allowed. Like the Turks becoming friends with Avalanche (did we forget that they are opposing terrorist groups who killed one another's supporters?). Or the impact of Holy and Meteor never being acknowledged or explained, despite being the pivotal plot piece of the original ending. Or Midgar being rebuilt when it was clearly shown as having decayed into a ruin in the original ending. But whatever.
I haven't seen The Spirits Within but it is essentially the reason that FF creator Sakaguchi was fired from Square, I've heard, in addition to being the reason for the unholy union of Square Enix.

Rugrats is great!
Who could forget such classic characters as Tommy, Chuckie, Swastika, the Hydroxide Twins, and Mitt Romney?

I like how you somehow arrived at the conclusion that "Hydroxide Twins" referred to Phil and Lil

There is the odd exception. Arietty springs to mind. But usually i think every English-speaking country gets the American dub.
The only Final Fantasy movie i've seen is Advent Children.
i didn't really understand the plot though

After i'd just said she was one of my favourite characters, no less.
I forget the context of that conversation though.
