imagei will watch the heck outta this pumpkin patch
I can see that it's uncomfortable, but, you don't live there.  It's not your state.  And they surely will change, given time.  Hopefully for the better, under the influence of the rest of the country.
  • ...And even when your hope is gone
move along, move along, just to make it through
    (2015 self)

I'm extremely uncomfortable with the idea that allowing conservative-leaning states to continue to be 1950s-era embarrassments is acceptable

This just smacks of "everyone is entitled to his own opinion except people who are terrible". As a terrible person myself, I have a vested interest in preventing decent people from doing just that.

  • Thing is, barring SCOTUS intervention, what we're going to end up with 5 years or so down the line is that every state is on board with gay marriage except Texas and Arizona

Whereas, if we argued it on a national level, once we had a majority of the country on board, we could force those more conservative areas to get with the program

i'd rather have a twinge of embarrassment about people on the other side of the country than not be able to get married right now.
  • terrible people are totally entitled to their opinions

but they are not entitled to act on them, and other people are not obligated to entertain them

You do realize that SCOTUS intervention is not just likely but likely within, like, a year, right?

I mean, Virginia, Arkansas, and Utah all had gay marriage bans overturned by lower courts, meaning that the issue is going to go up to the Supreme Court soon.

At this point the main enemy is the slowness that surrounds all political process.
  • You are the end result of a “would you push the button” prompt where the prompt was “you have unlimited godlike powers but you appear to all and sundry to be an impetuous child” – Zero, 2022
But my point is that SCOTUS intervention shouldn't be necessary

We shouldn't have to rely on fighting shit through the court system to change laws for the better

That's kind of the point of the court system though, to change laws that violate the "more fundamental" law of the land.
