From what little I know, I thought Nyx was "infamous" not "popular".

The idea that a fan-pony con be considered to rival the popularity of Derpy seems impossible to me.

Not totally sure on the details, but Nyx is an OC from a popular-but-controversial fanfic series, Past Sins (also appears in an earlier work by the same author). The premise behind her is kind of fanwanky since she's basically a cursed incarnation of Nightmare Moon, but I think most of the dislike is simply because she was an OC who became more popular than was welcome. That she's a cutesy alicorn probably didn't help.

Of course, the trolling potential of the character didn't go unnoticed.

Yeah, I've yet to see anyone who was THAT into bronies.

Even putting aside the fat, cheeto consuming aspect; I don't know anyone who has put up regular posters from the show* let alone sexy, bornie fan art.

Crap like what Whale posted is why I typically avoid the fandoms of crazy-popular cult favorites. It seems like every single one has people (typically other fans, incongruously enough) accusing the fandom of being losers, and I can't deal with that. Let me watch my geeky shows in peace, and I'll happily refrain from being Mr. Lemme Telya.
