Naney's utterly baffling computer problem

ok, so apparently when i try to put something in the USB 2.0 port it

1. will not go into the port

2. the computer powers off

i have checked the port for debris, but to no avail.

can someone give me the faintest inkling as to what is going on?

    random guess:
    1. something is physically blocking the port
    2. the internal wiring is such that when you vigorously try anyway, you shake things around inside until you jiggle the power stuff

    i guess that's kind of unlikely if you don't have to go in and rewire to turn it back on

    that's what I thought at first, but the port doesn't seem to have anything in it, and i've tried putting multiple things into it so it's something to do with the computer itself.

    and the powering off happens immediately and consistently when i push on it at all, which would seem to rule out any sort of jostling causing this.

    I wonder if there's some kind of electrical short? But that wouldn't explain why you can't physically insert things...
